Backend Product Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Louisiana.

📋 Description

• Take charge of designing, developing, and maintaining backend services and data systems that drive our products.

• Create and uphold APIs and services hosted on Google Cloud Platform.

• Oversee the data layer utilizing PostgreSQL, Firestore, and Firebase, which includes schema design, ensuring data integrity, managing migrations, and enhancing performance.

• Utilize AI coding and development tools daily, contributing to the evolution of the team's AI-first development methodologies.

• Design backend systems that support AI-driven product features, including integrations with LLM APIs and data pipelines.

• Collaborate with the SRE to monitor, manage, and enhance the environment, addressing deployments, observability, incident responses, and infrastructure choices.

• Protect school and student data by adhering to security and privacy protocols.

• Produce documentation and convey technical decisions effectively to both technical and non-technical colleagues.

⛳️ Requirements

• At least 5 years of professional experience in backend development.

• Strong technical capabilities and substantial experience in developing and maintaining production APIs and services.

• Practical experience with relational databases (preferably PostgreSQL), encompassing schema design, query optimization, and performance tuning.

• Familiarity with a leading cloud platform, with GCP experience being essential.

• Experience with Firebase and Firestore.

• A genuine passion for AI-assisted development and familiarity with tools like Claude Code, Cursor, or Copilot.

• Experience in integrating AI/LLM APIs into applications, or a strong eagerness to rapidly develop this skill.

• Comfortable collaborating on infrastructure and reliability tasks.

• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with engineering, product, and support teams.
