Backend Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in North America.

📋 Description

• Develop and manage Resend’s email transport infrastructure

• Engage with SMTP delivery, MTA systems, routing, retries, backoff strategies, and delivery controls

• Create domain-level, provider-level, customer-level, and IP-level throttling systems

• Establish infrastructure for shared IP pools, dedicated IPs, warmup execution, and reputation-aware routing

• Enhance the classification of bounces, deferrals, transient failures, hard failures, and delivery outcomes

• Construct debugging tools for delivery issues based on customer, domain, mailbox provider, route, IP, message type, and event

• Design systems that promote safer, more observable, and easier-to-operate sending behavior

• Convert reputation strategies into backend systems

• Collaborate with Trust & Safety and Core Sending teams to implement anti-abuse controls

• Take part in incident response for issues related to sending, providers, and deliverability

• Be available on-call for critical services

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive backend engineering experience

• Familiarity with email, messaging, notifications, communications, infrastructure, or other high-volume delivery systems

• Knowledge of queues, workers, retries, idempotency, rate limits, backpressure, and distributed systems

• Experience or a strong interest in SMTP, MTAs, DNS, bounces, deferrals, IP pools, and mailbox-provider behavior

• Commitment to reliability, observability, operational excellence, and minimizing blast radius

• Low ego, high ownership, and a strong preference for simple systems

• Experience working on applications with significant workloads

• Openness to learning more about email best practices

• Proficiency in Typescript and Golang
