Backend Developer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Malta.

📋 Description

• Develop and sustain backend services that incorporate third-party game providers into the platform.

• Oversee the technical lifecycle of integrations, from provider specifications through to implementation and production support.

• Ensure the reliability of services that manage game launches, betting and winning transactions, rollbacks, reconciliations, and provider callbacks.

• Execute and uphold integrations using PHP/Laravel according to provider API specifications and integration documents.

• Design and optimize database schemas and queries.

• Diagnose and resolve issues related to provider integrations, which includes direct technical communication with provider engineering teams.

• Investigate and address production incidents that impact game availability or player transactions, including being part of the on-call rotation.

• Develop and maintain automated tests that cover edge cases and failure scenarios for providers.

• Engage in code reviews, sprint planning, refinement, and retrospectives.

• Keep integration documentation up-to-date, detailing provider-specific behaviors and known quirks.

• Implement secure development practices and adhere to regulatory, licensing, and data protection standards.

• Provide support and mentorship to junior developers.

• Undertake additional related responsibilities as needed.

⛳️ Requirements

• At least 3 years of professional PHP development experience.

• Basic working knowledge of Python.

• Proficient experience with Laravel, including Eloquent, queues, service container, and Artisan tooling.

• Comfort in working with an older procedural PHP codebase alongside modern framework code, and migrating between the two.

• Hands-on experience in integrating third-party REST APIs, including managing authentication, retries, timeouts, and inconsistent provider behaviors.

• Proficiency with relational databases, including schema design, indexing, and query optimization.

• Understanding of transactional integrity, concurrency, and idempotency in financial or wallet-style operations.

• Experience with RabbitMQ or a similar message broker, encompassing consumers, queue configuration, and managing unprocessed or piling messages.

• Familiarity with Redis for caching and pub/sub functionalities.

• Experience using Git, with knowledge of branching workflows and CI/CD pipelines.

• Automated testing experience with PHPUnit; familiarity with static analysis and style tools (PHPStan, PHPMD, Laravel Pint).

• Knowledge of Docker and basic familiarity with Kubernetes for local development.

• Ability to debug production issues across service boundaries and determine whether a fault lies with us or the provider.

• Proficient written and verbal communication in English, adequate for direct communication with external provider teams.

• Capability to work independently on designated tasks while promptly escalating any blockers.

• A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
