This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
β’ Develop and execute a communications strategy for the Sierra Club across a designated portfolio of states.
β’ Act as a liaison among internal teams, committees, external partners, and stakeholders.
β’ Monitor media coverage related to pertinent issues.
β’ Create and implement both long-term and immediate media outreach strategies.
β’ Craft media messages, op-eds, press releases, video/audio content, talking points, and other communication materials.
β’ Organize media events and tailor federal agency media opportunities to local contexts.
β’ Formulate strategic media responses to relevant reports, initiatives from the Environmental Law Program, and other external developments.
β’ Participate in staff strategy meetings and remain informed about conservation campaigns and political trends.
β’ Cultivate relationships with local, regional, and trade journalists and influencers.
β’ Propose story ideas and facilitate connections between reporters and spokespeople.
β’ Mentor and train state-based staff and volunteers in strategic communications practices.
β’ Identify, train, and position compelling spokespeople.
β’ Assist staff, volunteers, and partners with media training, messaging strategies, and interview preparation.
β’ Professional background as a journalist, media liaison, spokesperson, press secretary, or in another public relations capacity.
β’ Familiarity with best practices for leveraging media to further organizational objectives.
β’ Exceptional writing and verbal communication skills.
β’ Capacity to interact positively and effectively with both internal and external partners.
β’ Skill in establishing strong relationships with staff, volunteers, and stakeholders.
β’ Proven knowledge of energy, land, and/or climate issues, along with an understanding of the relevant media landscape.
β’ Experience in executing innovative tactics, such as audio/video content, podcasts, projections, murals, performance art, and advertising.
β’ Ability to foster alignment among stakeholders while managing competing project priorities.
β’ Proficient with Cision and/or other media outreach and tracking platforms.
β’ Spanish language proficiency is preferred.
