This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.
β’ Assist with significant litigation cases
β’ Take charge of small to mid-sized litigation and negotiation matters
β’ Create and implement legal and litigation strategies
β’ Perform legal research
β’ Compose correspondence, affidavits, pleadings, applications, and legislation for Indigenous governments
β’ Execute or coordinate agreements with government entities
β’ Interview witnesses, gather evidence, and prepare for discovery
β’ Represent before courts and tribunals, including presenting applications and segments of oral submissions
β’ Conduct community sessions on law-making and discussions with Elders and knowledge keepers
β’ Prepare for trials, which includes formulating questions and statements and attending all court levels
β’ Support self-governance, jurisdictional, and exploratory negotiations
β’ Manage client files effectively
β’ Focus primarily on Aboriginal law, encompassing Aboriginal and Treaty Rights, consultation and accommodation, reserve and Aboriginal title lands, and Indigenous self-determination and jurisdiction
β’ May involve handling regulatory proceedings as well as constitutional, administrative, and municipal law issues
β’ 4β7 years of experience in litigation
β’ Experience across various court levels
β’ Strong advocacy as well as oral and written communication abilities
β’ Exceptional analytical, interpretive, research, and drafting skills
β’ Demonstrated negotiation capabilities
β’ Capacity to work independently
β’ Knowledge of civil procedures
β’ Proficient in relationship-building and teamwork
β’ Eligible to practice law in Ontario as a member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
β’ Asset: Experience working with Indigenous communities or individuals
β’ Asset: Knowledge of Aboriginal and Constitutional Law
β’ Asset: Familiarity with regulatory hearing processes
β’ Asset: Understanding of negotiation and consultation processes involving Indigenous Nations, government, and industry
