This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Report directly to the General Counsel and assist with updates to the CEO and Board of Directors regarding significant legal issues.
• Manage and respond to inquiries and charges from agencies such as the EEOC, Texas Workforce Commission, and others.
• Draft position statements and address information requests.
• Represent the organization during mediation and conciliation processes.
• Assess attorney demand letters and pre-litigation claims.
• Create resolution strategies, negotiate settlements, and prepare settlement and release agreements.
• Oversee employment lawsuits and arbitrations, including wage-and-hour class and collective actions, in collaboration with outside counsel.
• Develop litigation strategies and review pleadings, discovery, and motions.
• Monitor litigation budgets and provide recommendations to outside counsel and the General Counsel.
• Draft and disseminate legal holds while coordinating document preservation, collection, production, and electronic discovery.
• Communicate with current and former employees possessing relevant knowledge.
• Prepare employees for depositions and attend as necessary.
• Address subpoenas and non-party discovery requests.
• Engage and manage outside counsel, negotiate engagement terms, review invoices, enforce billing guidelines, and maintain case files and matter summaries.
• Provide guidance to Human Resources and property leadership on terminations, corrective actions, and escalated workplace investigations.
• Offer advice on leave programs, disability and accommodation requests, and return-to-work issues.
• Review and draft the employee handbook, HR policies, and employment-related agreements.
• Keep abreast of federal, state, and local employment and labor law developments and support multi-state compliance.
• Collaborate with insurance brokers and carriers concerning employment practices liability claims.
• Work with Human Resources and management teams to create training materials.
• Provide timely and practical legal counsel to support operational decision-making.
• Travel approximately 10% annually for property visits or internal meetings.
• Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school.
• Active membership in good standing with at least one state bar.
• Attorneys not licensed in Texas must be eligible to register as in-house counsel with the Texas Board of Law Examiners.
• 3–5 years of experience in employment and labor law, including managing agency charges and employment litigation.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
• Ability to deliver sound, practical recommendations efficiently.
• Direct, straightforward, and concise communication style.
• Capability to articulate legal issues in plain language to HR professionals and business leaders at all levels.
• Proficient in managing a high volume of matters, prioritizing effectively, and meeting various deadlines.
• Adhere to the highest ethical standards.
• Self-motivated and resourceful in approach.
• Ability to establish credibility and trust with colleagues both within and outside the organization.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Familiarity with HRIS and e-discovery platforms is an advantage.
• Experience in property management, real estate, or another multi-site industry is preferred but not mandatory.
• This is a safety-sensitive role and may be subject to additional compliance obligations.
• Remote work arrangement.
• Estimated travel at 10% of work time annually for property visits or internal meetings.
