Assistant Cultural Resources Technician, Level 2

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Pennsylvania.

📋 Description

• Recognize, excavate, and document potential archaeological locations.

• Clean and/or process artifacts for laboratory examination.

• Assist with laboratory responsibilities related to post-field operations.

• Aid in Phase I to Phase III historic and/or prehistoric investigations.

• Adhere to GAI, client, and OSHA health and safety regulations.

• Uphold client confidentiality.

• Excavate, screen, and gather archaeological materials in compliance with state and federal guidelines.

• Identify and document archaeological features and structures.

• Record and map survey areas, testing sites, excavations, and cultural resources.

• Complete both paper and electronic field documentation.

• Record soil characteristics including color and type using a Munsell soil chart.

• Utilize a compass for basic navigation.

• Manually clear brush and vegetation.

• Work outdoors and traverse varied terrains while carrying tools and equipment.

• Perform additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

• Manage personal responsibilities and adhere to deadlines and project scope.

• Mentor or coach less experienced team members and potentially lead a small crew.

• Ensure projects remain within budget and on schedule.

• Discuss technician performance with management.

• Clearly communicate field findings to senior cultural resources staff.

⛳️ Requirements

• B.A. or B.S. degree in Archaeology/Anthropology or a related field; A.A. or B.A./B.S. degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, Historic Preservation, American Studies, or an equivalent degree; or equivalent skills and experience.

• Preferred one to three years of CRM experience in North America.

• Minimum of 2 to 3 years of relevant experience.

• Proficiency in archaeological field excavation techniques, artifact identification, data documentation, mapping, and surveying.

• Completion of an academic field school is preferred or currently enrolled in one.

• Strong oral and written communication abilities.

• Willingness to travel, requiring up to 100% availability during weekdays and occasionally on weekends.

• Capability to work outdoors in diverse and extreme weather conditions.

• Ability to hike off-trail across rugged terrain while carrying up to 25 lbs of equipment.

• Ability to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 40 lbs.

• Capability to dig extensively, shovel, screen soils, and manually clear brush/vegetation.

• Independent transportation is preferred.

• Pre-employment drug testing is mandatory.

• A valid driver’s license is required.

• Steel-toed shoes are necessary.

• Ability to work independently or under supervision and follow directions.

• Basic knowledge of soils, photography, compass/navigation, field forms, and sketch maps.

• Ability to obtain and maintain basic field kits and company-issued field equipment.
