Assistant Cultural Resources Technician

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Pennsylvania.

📋 Description

• Assist in cultural resources initiatives throughout the mid-Atlantic and Midwestern regions.

• Recognize, excavate, and document potential archaeological sites in accordance with state archaeological standards.

• Engage in Phase I through Phase III historical and/or prehistoric investigations.

• Adhere to health and safety regulations set by GAI, clients, and OSHA.

• Uphold client confidentiality standards.

• Excavate, screen, and gather archaeological materials.

• Identify and document archaeological features and structures within project rights-of-way.

• Capture photographs and create maps of survey locations, testing sites, excavations, and visible cultural resources.

• Accurately complete paper and/or electronic field forms.

• Record soil types utilizing a Munsell soil chart.

• Utilize a compass for basic navigation within project areas.

• Manually clear brush and vegetation as required.

• Work outdoors in diverse weather conditions.

• Hike off-trail while carrying tools and equipment.

• Manage personal assignments and meet deadlines and project requirements.

• Maintain and care for company-issued field equipment.

• Carry out additional responsibilities as directed by the supervisor.

⛳️ Requirements

• 1–2 years of experience in archaeological fieldwork, or comparable skills and experience.

• A.A. or B.A./B.S. degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, Historic Preservation, American Studies, or a related field; enrolled in field school; or equivalent skills and experience.

• Proficient in excavation and screening techniques.

• Capability to identify and document archaeological materials, features, and structures.

• Accurate field note-taking and completion of paper or electronic forms.

• Skills in sketch mapping and basic photography.

• Soil documentation using a Munsell soil chart.

• Basic compass navigation abilities.

• Proficient oral and written communication skills.

• Ability to work effectively in a team setting and follow instructions.

• Willingness to travel up to 100% during weekdays, with occasional weekend travel and/or work.

• Capability to perform physically demanding outdoor tasks under varying and extreme weather conditions.

• Ability to hike off-trail while carrying up to 25 lbs of equipment.

• Ability to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 40 lbs.

• Ability to extensively dig/shovel and manually clear brush/vegetation.

• Must have steel-toed shoes.

• Must possess a valid driver's license.

• Must acquire and maintain a basic field kit.

• Ability to comply with GAI, client, and OSHA health and safety regulations.
