Assistant Archaeologist 2

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Pennsylvania.

📋 Description

• Assist with various archaeological field projects throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

• Locate, excavate, and document potential archaeological sites.

• Clean and/or prepare artifacts for laboratory analysis.

• Support laboratory activities related to post-fieldwork tasks.

• Excavate, sift, and gather archaeological materials in compliance with state and federal regulations.

• Identify and document archaeological features and structures.

• Record and map survey areas, testing sites, excavations, and cultural resources.

• Complete both paper and electronic field documentation.

• Note soil color and type utilizing a Munsell soil chart.

• Utilize a compass for basic navigation.

• Manually clear brush and vegetation as required.

• Work outdoors in various weather conditions and traverse rugged terrain.

• Uphold client confidentiality and adhere to GAI, client, and OSHA health and safety protocols.

• Manage personal responsibilities while meeting deadlines and project parameters.

• Mentor or coach less experienced personnel and potentially supervise a small team.

• Stay within budget and schedule, and communicate technician performance to managers.

• Clearly convey field findings to senior cultural resources staff.

⛳️ Requirements

• An A.A. or B.A./B.S. degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, Historic Preservation, American Studies, or a related field; enrollment in a field school; or equivalent skills and experience.

• An Associate's degree or higher in Anthropology or a related discipline.

• 2-3 years of experience in archaeological fieldwork.

• Preferred 1 to 3 years of CRM experience in North America.

• Proficiency in archaeological field excavation techniques, artifact identification, data recording, mapping, and surveying.

• Basic understanding of soil types.

• Strong note-taking skills and completion of field forms.

• Ability to create sketch maps, perform basic photography, and possess basic compass/navigation skills.

• Excellent oral and written communication capabilities.

• Willingness to travel, including up to 100% during weekdays and occasional weekend work.

• Independent transportation is preferred.

• Valid driver's license is required.

• Capability to work outdoors in various and extreme weather conditions.

• Ability to hike off-trail and navigate rugged terrain while carrying tools and equipment.

• Capacity to lift and/or move items weighing up to 40 lbs and transport up to 25 lbs of gear.

• Ability to extensively dig, shovel, screen soils, and manually remove brush/vegetation.

• Steel-toed shoes are a must.

• Capability to work independently or under supervision and take directions from a leader.
