Apprentice Fire Sprinkler Inspector

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Minnesota.

📋 Description

• Collaborate closely with a qualified FSS inspector under their direct supervision.

• Inspect, test, and maintain water-based fire protection systems in various settings, including commercial, industrial, and multifamily buildings.

• Assist in the inspection and testing of wet pipe, dry pipe, pre-action, deluge, and antifreeze sprinkler systems, as well as standpipes and fire pumps.

• Conduct visual inspections of sprinklers, piping, hangers, bracing, control valves, gauges, fire department connections, and signage.

• Aid in operating control valves and executing main drain, waterflow alarm, and valve supervisory switch tests.

• Support the performance of dry pipe valve trip tests, quick-opening device tests, air supply and low-air alarm checks, and fire pump tests.

• Verify antifreeze concentration, spare sprinkler cabinets, gauge dates, and other NFPA 25 requirements.

• Carry out minor maintenance and corrective actions as instructed by the supervising inspector.

• Coordinate with building contacts and alarm monitoring companies to confirm that systems are ready for testing.

• Adhere to FSS impairment procedures when systems are taken offline.

• Ensure systems are reinstated, control valves are opened and monitored, and relevant parties are notified before departing from sites.

• Treat customers, building occupants, and site personnel with courtesy while respecting property, schedules, and site regulations.

• Accurately document inspection and test results in FSS forms or software, including photographs of any deficiencies.

• Report deficiencies to the supervising inspector on the same day and immediately notify them of any conditions that may hinder system operation.

• Comply with the FSS Safety Program, OSHA regulations, site-specific safety protocols, and PPE requirements.

• Utilize ladders, lifts, and equipment only after proper training and authorization have been obtained.

• Promptly report any injuries, near misses, property damage, or vehicle incidents.

• Drive a company vehicle safely between job sites in accordance with FSS policies.

• Complete assigned classroom, online, and on-the-job training while tracking training hours.

• Strive for NICET Level I certification and pursue higher levels thereafter.

• Acquire and maintain any state-required apprentice or trainee registration.

⛳️ Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years old.

• High school diploma or GED is required.

• Possess a valid driver’s license and a driving record that meets the criteria set by FSS and its insurance provider.

• Basic math skills are necessary, including the ability to read pressure gauges and perform simple calculations.

• Mechanical aptitude and a willingness to learn about the functioning of fire protection systems are essential.

• Capability to use a smartphone or tablet for report completion.

• Ability to follow both written and verbal instructions and communicate effectively with coworkers and customers.

• Successful completion of pre-employment screening after receiving a conditional job offer, which may include a background check, review of motor vehicle records, and drug screening, as permitted by applicable state and local law.

• Regular ability to lift, carry, push, and pull items weighing up to 50 pounds.

• Ability to climb and work from ladders and lifts, including at heights.

• Capability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crawl, and reach overhead for extended periods.

• Ability to read gauges, tags, and labels and differentiate colors.

• Must be able to work indoors and outdoors under various conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, noise, dust, and wet environments.

• Willingness to work a full-time schedule that may include early mornings, overtime, and occasional evening or weekend shifts.

• Some overnight travel within the FSS service area may be necessary.

• Preferred qualifications include experience in plumbing, pipefitting, HVAC, mechanical service, or fire protection, including military experience.

• Preferred: Completion of vocational or technical school coursework.

• Preferred: OSHA 10-Hour Construction certification.

• Preferred: Experience with hand tools, ladders, and aerial or scissor lifts.
