Apprentice Fire Sprinkler Inspector

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Minnesota.

📋 Description

• Collaborate closely with and under the direct guidance of a certified FSS inspector.

• Assist in the inspection, testing, and maintenance of wet pipe, dry pipe, pre-action, deluge, and antifreeze sprinkler systems, as well as standpipes and fire pumps.

• Conduct visual inspections of sprinklers, piping, hangers, bracing, control valves, gauges, fire department connections, and signage.

• Aid in operating control valves and executing main drain, waterflow alarm, and valve supervisory switch tests.

• Support the performance of dry pipe valve trip tests, quick-opening device tests, air supply and low-air alarm checks, and fire pump evaluations.

• Verify antifreeze concentration, check spare sprinkler cabinets, gauge dates, and ensure compliance with other NFPA 25 standards.

• Carry out minor maintenance and corrective tasks as instructed, adhering to apprentice status and relevant licensing regulations.

• Confirm that systems can be tested with building contacts and alarm monitoring firms.

• Adhere to impairment protocols when systems are taken out of service.

• Ensure systems are reinstated, valves are open and monitored, and stakeholders are informed prior to departure.

• Accurately document inspection and testing results in FSS forms or software, including photographs of any deficiencies.

• Report any deficiencies to the supervising inspector on the same day and notify them of critical conditions immediately.

• Comply with FSS safety protocols, OSHA regulations, PPE requirements, equipment authorization, and incident reporting procedures.

• Operate a company vehicle safely between job locations.

• Complete classroom, online, and on-the-job training while tracking training hours.

• Pursue NICET Level I certification and maintain the necessary state apprentice or trainee registration.

⛳️ Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years old.

• Possess a high school diploma or GED.

• Hold a valid driver’s license with a driving record that meets FSS and its insurance provider's standards.

• Basic math skills are required, including the ability to read pressure gauges and perform simple calculations.

• Mechanical aptitude and a willingness to learn about fire protection systems.

• Capability to use a smartphone or tablet for report completion.

• Ability to follow both written and verbal instructions and communicate effectively with colleagues and clients.

• Successful completion of pre-employment screening after a conditional offer, which may involve a background check, motor vehicle record review, and drug screening.

• Physical ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.

• Capacity to climb and work from ladders and lifts, including at heights.

• Willingness to work indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, noise, dust, and wet environments.

• Availability for a full-time schedule that may include early shifts, overtime, and occasional evening or weekend work.

• Some overnight travel within the FSS service area may be necessary.

• Preferred: Experience in plumbing, pipefitting, HVAC, mechanical services, fire protection, or military trade experience.

• Preferred: Completion of vocational or technical school coursework.

• Preferred: OSHA 10-Hour Construction certification.

• Preferred: Familiarity with hand tools, ladders, and aerial or scissor lifts.
