This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Japan.
• Engage in game engine programming for thrilling projects aimed at next-generation consoles.
• Evaluate code submitted by fellow engineers to ensure it aligns with quality standards.
• Create systems and associated utilities for proprietary custom engines.
• Incorporate rendering engines into current codebases.
• Implement architectural modifications to seamlessly and extensibly support new engine features.
• Focus on save data management, job systems, memory management, and developmental support features.
• Independently design, test, and debug code.
• Decompose large features into manageable engineering tasks and collaborate with other engineers.
• Analyze and comprehend complex systems.
• Guide engineers in best practices for engine development.
• Develop systems with a strong emphasis on optimization and performance.
• Assess tasks and ensure timely delivery.
• Produce clear, maintainable code that successfully passes senior-engineer reviews.
• Highlight any blockers to the project lead.
• Test and document solutions thoroughly.
• Implement and maintain software engineering best practices throughout the entire software development life cycle.
• Take responsibility for significant and mission-critical sections of the codebase and complex features.
• Collaborate with non-engineering team members to deliver functional features.
• Evaluate feature feasibility and suggest solutions.
• Offer programming expertise for large features and architectural recommendations.
• Analyze code reviews to spot potential design and implementation issues.
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field; or equivalent professional experience.
• For candidates based in Japan: 3+ years of professional software engineering experience and at least 2 years in developing custom engines.
• For candidates based overseas: 7+ years of professional software engineering experience and 5+ years focused on developing custom engines.
• Several years of experience working with custom engines.
• Experience with released games on consoles.
• Ability to write clean, readable, and efficient code while designing its architecture.
• Strong debugging and optimization capabilities.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Familiarity with existing optimization techniques.
• Strong emphasis on performance and performance analysis.
• Proficient math skills.
• Solid software development skills, along with knowledge of design theory and development processes.
• Strong personal time management abilities.
• Experience with rendering engines, animation-specific tools, and platforms like PlayStation or Microsoft.
• Robust software engineering skills and understanding of coding patterns.
• Significant experience with C++ and proficiency in C# (WPF).
• Comfortable using source code management systems such as Git, SVN, or Perforce.
• At least conversational proficiency in Japanese (JLPT N3 or higher).
• Sufficient English proficiency to read, write, and discuss technical topics.
• Willingness to be an active team member and engage in technical discussions.
• Open to providing and receiving constructive feedback.
• Must reside in Japan during the duration of employment.
• Preferred qualifications include: Ruby, Python, shell scripting, experience with other game engines, 3+ years in the video game industry, and at least one released game.
