Substation Services Technician – Travel

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Arizona, +1 more state.

📋 Description

• Conduct specialized testing, diagnostics, maintenance, installation, and commissioning assistance on medium- and high-voltage electrical equipment.

• Carry out advanced electrical testing and condition evaluations of substation equipment.

• Execute preventive and corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, failure analysis, and equipment replacement.

• Lead and assist with scheduled outages and emergency responses.

• Oversee the maintenance of GSU transformers, medium-voltage transformers, disconnect and hook switches, capacitor bank switchers, bushings, cable systems, and electrical connections.

• Coordinate work with subcontractors and specialty vendors.

• Aid in commissioning and return-to-service activities.

• Create field reports and document testing results and maintenance observations.

• Offer technical advice regarding repairs or replacements.

• Execute tasks in accordance with OSHA 1910.269, NFPA 70E, NESC, and company safety protocols.

• Perform Job Hazard Analyses and adhere to Lockout/Tagout, grounding, and switching procedures.

• Travel across North America approximately 75–80% of the time in support of customer projects.

⛳️ Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent qualification.

• Over 5 years of experience in medium- and high-voltage electrical work.

• At least 3 years of experience in maintenance for substations, utilities, industrial settings, or renewable energy.

• Minimum of 2 years of experience testing and maintaining transformers, disconnect switches, and substation equipment.

• Familiarity with interpreting electrical test results and assessing equipment condition.

• Solid understanding of utility substations, transformer diagnostics and maintenance, protective devices, medium-voltage cable systems, grounding systems, electrical switching, Lockout/Tagout, arc flash safety, NETA testing standards, transformer oil sampling, and electrical schematics.

• Experience with or knowledge of Doble M4100/M7100, Megger insulation resistance testers, transformer turns ratio testing equipment, digital low resistance ohmmeters, and process calibrators.

• Proficient in electrical troubleshooting, transformer diagnostics, technical report writing, root cause analysis, reading electrical diagrams, customer communication, team leadership, project coordination, and computer skills in Microsoft Office and CMMS.

• Capacity to work outdoors for extended durations, lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders and structures, operate from manlifts and telehandlers, wear required PPE, and traverse uneven terrain.

• Willingness to travel up to 80% of the time.

• Preferred qualifications include formal technical education such as Journeyman Electrician or Electrical Technician certification, military electrical training, transformer testing experience, protective relay test set knowledge, NETA certification, relay training, experience in utility or renewable energy substations, independent electrical testing company experience, and commissioning experience.
