Staff Software Engineer – Site Defense

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Create, develop, and manage large-scale, low-latency systems that safeguard Reddit against DDoS attacks, bots, and automated misuse.

• Evaluate, enhance, and advance ingress-level defenses across CDN, edge, and internal infrastructure layers.

• Construct real-time systems to identify, assess, and mitigate harmful traffic with precision at both per-request and per-user levels.

• Collaborate with Infrastructure, Security, and internal Safety teams to achieve a balance between security, performance, and user experience.

• Provide mentorship to junior engineers.

• Contribute to ML-at-Ingress projects, which include models for traffic classification, bot detection, and anomaly detection.

• Take ownership of services from start to finish, encompassing design, implementation, on-call responsibilities, and operational excellence.

• Engage in incident response and conduct post-incident analysis for significant network or abuse events.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 7 years of experience in building and maintaining high throughput and low latency production distributed systems.

• Proficient in software development using one or more general-purpose programming languages: Python, Go, Rust, Java, or C++.

• Exceptional communication skills to work effectively with a service-oriented team and the broader company.

• Familiarity with DDoS mitigation, Web Application Firewalls (WAFs), bot management, or abuse prevention systems.

• Knowledge of networking fundamentals, including HTTP, TLS, TCP/IP, proxies, CDNs, and load balancing.
