Staff Software Engineer – Data

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Transform product requirements into technical specifications by modeling the domain, defining interfaces and workflows, and managing trade-offs.

• Decompose larger problems into manageable tasks that can be handled by other engineers, sequencing deliveries to ensure that valuable functionality is released early.

• Influence significant architectural choices across the data platform.

• Take ownership of components from design through to production.

• Work across the technology stack, primarily utilizing Go, Kotlin, Rust, and Python when suitable.

• Design systems for accuracy and performance under real-world volumes, incorporating large-scale data ingestion, distributed processing, and data lake storage.

• Elevate the standards for design reviews, testing, and task breakdown.

• Guide engineers by setting an example within a fully distributed team.

• Collaborate with product stakeholders, customers, and the engineering team to define and commit to project scopes.

⛳️ Requirements

• Strong background as a generalist with a solid foundation in computer science principles.

• Quick adaptability to new technologies and problem domains.

• Ability to reason from first principles, clarify assumptions, identify constraints and invariants, and derive effective solutions.

• Proven experience in designing and deploying distributed data systems.

• Capability to make system contracts, state transitions, invariants, and failure modes explicit.

• Understanding of fault models and scaling vulnerabilities in distributed data systems.

• Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to commit to and defend project scopes.

• Proficient use of AI tools, along with an understanding of their limitations.

• Strong written communication skills.

• Not mandatory, but beneficial: experience with data lakes and formats such as Parquet, Iceberg, or Deltalog.
