Staff Production Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of a long-term engagement area within one of Canva's most critical technical domains.

• Develop production software aimed at enhancing reliability, efficiency, and resilience.

• Instrument, refactor, and reconstruct software components that present challenges at scale.

• Collaborate closely with product and infrastructure teams as an embedded engineer.

• Partner with, mentor, and learn alongside fellow production engineers.

• Minimize incidents, speed up recovery, decrease incident severity, and enhance latency.

• Contribute to shared platform capabilities when recurrent patterns are identified.

• Create system-level leverage by optimizing the way engineers build upon critical systems.

• Establish trusted relationships with embedded teams to help them deliver faster with increased confidence and reduced toil.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience managing reliability initiatives in large-scale distributed systems.

• Background as an engineer embedded within or closely collaborating with a product or feature team.

• Hands-on experience with production-scale development in Java, Go, Rust, C++, or a similar systems language.

• Practical knowledge of sharding, replication, failure modes, and consistency trade-offs.

• Ability to troubleshoot large and unfamiliar codebases.

• Demonstrated ability to influence without authority through technical acumen and trust-building.

• Depth of knowledge in networking.

• Strong understanding of Linux internals and kernel-level concepts.

• Familiarity with distributed systems patterns such as consistent hashing, leader election, consensus, backpressure, and circuit breakers.

• Experience with observability tools, including tracing, dashboards, alerting, and SLOs.

• Proficiency with Kubernetes and production-scale container orchestration.

• Experience in performance profiling of JVM applications or systems-level processes.

• Significant experience with AWS cloud infrastructure.

• Extensive on-call and incident-response experience in a production environment.

• Background in Enterprise SaaS (nice to have).

• Experience with JVM internals, including GC tuning and thread profiling (nice to have).

• Familiarity with multi-region or sharding strategies (nice to have).

• Experience with eBPF or kernel instrumentation (nice to have).
