Staff Engineer, Checkout Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Germany.

📋 Description

• Develop and enhance the Core Commerce Services platform.

• Design and implement scalable, channel-agnostic checkout solutions from initial technical discovery to final production.

• Outline APIs, define domain boundaries, and establish integration patterns.

• Make informed decisions regarding scalability, reliability, security, observability, and long-term sustainability.

• Ensure alignment of technical choices and integration agreements across Checkout, Payment, and related teams.

• Maintain clear ownership delineations.

• Guide engineers through collaborative coding, design conversations, code assessments, and technical critiques.

• Elevate engineering standards within the team.

• Collaborate with Product teams to convert business requirements into scalable technical solutions.

• Lay the groundwork for AI-driven assistants, agentic commerce, and emerging channels.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proficient in Java and backend engineering.

• Experience in designing and building backend services, platforms, and large-scale distributed systems.

• Practical coding experience in production environments.

• Staff/Principal-level experience or equivalent senior technical leadership background.

• Strong capabilities in system design and architecture.

• Ability to assume significant technical ownership with considerable autonomy.

• Experience in greenfield or 0-to-1 project environments.

• Capacity to explore alternatives, assess trade-offs, and make pragmatic technical choices.

• Proven history of mentoring engineers and leading through influence.

• Familiarity with headless or traditional checkout, order management, SaaS/platform engineering, e-commerce, or marketplaces is advantageous but not mandatory.
