Staff Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States, +2 more countries.

📋 Description

• Act as the technical leader for software that integrates various business and engineering workflows.

• Define the architecture and technical strategy across underwriting, rating, claims, and shared services.

• Conduct design reviews and provide guidance to teams on intricate design and implementation choices.

• Propel extensive technical initiatives from inception to completion, clearly communicating their value, status, and progress.

• Design and develop essential frontend and backend components utilizing TypeScript/JavaScript, Node.js, and Python.

• Analyze complex systems while linking technical excellence to business results.

• Collaborate with product managers, designers, engineering managers, and domain experts to devise scalable solutions.

• Enhance engineering quality through design documentation, code reviews, observability, and CI/CD practices.

• Mentor senior engineers, facilitate team progress, share institutional knowledge, and foster staff-level contributions.

• Evaluate build-vs-buy decisions and prioritize technology investments that enhance underwriting and rating/data capabilities.

• Design and implement LLM-powered workflows to boost productivity for underwriters and operators.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of experience in software engineering, showcasing Staff-level (or equivalent) impact.

• Demonstrated leadership in navigating ambiguous, multi-quarter technical initiatives across teams.

• Capability to design comprehensive systems and data models arising from business domain use cases.

• A robust systems mindset with a focus on extensibility, scalability, performance, maintainability, testability, and operability.

• Proven history of uplifting peers through architecture reviews, mentorship, and effective technical communication.

• Strong full-stack fluency, with a preference for TypeScript/JavaScript and Python.

• Experience with CI/CD methodologies, including GitHub Actions, AWS CodePipeline, Jenkins, or similar tools.

• Proficiency in production debugging and observability.

• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.

• Ability to influence engineering, product, and business stakeholders.

• Skill in deconstructing complex, ambiguous technical tasks into manageable deliverables, organized by value and dependency.

• Prior experience in startup or high-growth environments (preferred).

• Experience in insurance, fintech, or other regulated sectors (preferred).

• Familiarity with JS/TS, HTML, CSS/SCSS, React, Angular, and Node.js (preferred).

• Experience in integrating third-party platforms (preferred).
