Staff Data Scientist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of complex, high-impact problem areas across product and business sectors, from defining questions to conducting analysis and developing solutions in collaboration with cross-functional teams.

• Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders and company leadership to define product strategy and foresee upcoming challenges.

• Create and assess experiments to gauge the impact of product and strategic modifications.

• Examine product data to identify underlying causes of metric fluctuations.

• Create tools, methodologies, and frameworks that enhance data practices throughout the data team and the organization.

• Guide other data scientists and promote industry best practices.

• Develop metrics and measurements, design randomized controlled trials, create visualizations, and identify usage patterns and opportunities across Quora.

• Engage in areas such as user growth, content quality, monetization, personalization, marketplace dynamics, and overarching company strategy.

⛳️ Requirements

• Availability for meetings and spontaneous communication during Quora's coordination hours, Monday–Friday, 9am–3pm Pacific Time.

• Over 7 years of experience in an analytical or quantitative role, including at least 5 years as a Data Scientist or a comparable position.

• Proven track record of success in a senior or staff-level role demonstrating significant scope and autonomy.

• Capable of addressing challenging data inquiries that necessitate deep product ownership and/or cross-functional leadership.

• Proficient in statistical methods such as regression, hypothesis testing, and causal inference.

• Experience in mentoring fellow data scientists and elevating team standards through best practices and process enhancements.

• Strong communication skills, including the ability to transform vague business needs into analytical questions and convey technical outcomes to executives and cross-functional collaborators.

• Extensive experience using Python or R for data manipulation, modeling, and analysis.

• Comfortable working within a production codebase.

• Excellent judgment in balancing quantitative precision with product intuition and common sense.

• Preferred: At least 2 years of experience evaluating recommender systems through offline analysis and online experiments.

• Preferred: Experience in setting technical direction or strategy for a team or significant workstream.

• Preferred: Familiarity with large datasets and distributed computing tools like Presto/Trino.

• Preferred: An active user of Quora with a genuine curiosity about the platform.
