Staff Data Platform Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Develop reusable, well-structured paved roads throughout engineering.

• Collaborate with all engineering teams while reporting to the Director of Software Engineering.

• Establish guidelines and processes for data access and storage.

• Advocate for best practices and set a positive example.

• Create reusable infrastructure as code to enhance efficiency and expand engineering capabilities.

• Construct reusable IaC for managing database resources.

• Automate the provisioning of human and system users to secure databases.

• Integrate operational monitoring with application monitoring and comprehensive data flow monitoring.

• Optimize database performance.

• Design, implement, and test logical and physical database backup and recovery strategies aligned with disaster recovery and business continuity goals.

• Review and suggest the most suitable data stores for applications.

• Assess the database ecosystem and refine the Data North Star.

• Analyze tools and services to balance power, extensibility, training, and operational effort.

• Assist teams in modeling data schemas.

• Evaluate data access libraries and access patterns.

• Build plug-and-play cloud database infrastructure that incorporates best practices.

• Enhance existing codebases, reinforce secure coding practices, identify vulnerabilities, and prioritize data privacy and access control.

• Minimize technical debt and enhance system quality.

• Establish best practices for schemas, data sharing, and data access layers.

• Elevate the organization’s technical standards through documentation, reference implementations, advocacy, and role modeling.

• Mentor senior engineers and emerging technical leaders.

• Facilitate technical discussions and drive consensus on design.

• Promote secure data practices across the product.

• Foster trust and exhibit kindness, empathy, optimism, curiosity, and vulnerability.

• Extensive, hands-on expertise across essential technical domains, demonstrating the ability to lead system design, architectural patterns, and engineering best practices.

• Capability to select tools based on functional coverage and total cost of ownership.

• Ability to reason between No-SQL and relational stores, as well as transactional and analytical data architectures.

• Proficiency in designing long-term architectures that consider scale, reliability, security, and maintainability.

• Skill in articulating and defending well-reasoned technical solutions through written documentation.

• Experience in identifying and prioritizing technical debt, defining testing strategies, and assessing technical risk.

• Expertise in debugging complex issues at any level of the stack.

• Proven capability to lead technical strategy and execution for significant initiatives that involve multiple teams or systems.

• Experience aligning objectives with division and organizational goals.

• Ability to estimate large cross-team projects with significant uncertainties and develop mitigation plans.

• Skill in enhancing engineering effectiveness through technical leadership, tooling, infrastructure, and process improvements.

• Provide technical leadership across multiple teams without direct management responsibilities.

• Demonstrated success in mentoring senior engineers and nurturing future technical leaders.

• Competence in representing engineering in cross-functional discussions with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Over 10 years of professional software engineering experience with a focus on data specialization and production delivery across transactional and analytical scenarios.

• Experience in promoting secure coding practices, data privacy principles, and access control patterns in production systems.

• Test-driven mindset with experience in writing, maintaining, and implementing test strategies at the team or product level.

• Effective collaboration with product, data science, and R&D teams.

• Experience utilizing AI as a daily assistant, applying sound judgment regarding its use.

• Expert-level experience with No-SQL, relational, and columnar data stores, including Mongo, DynamoDB, PostgreSQL, and Snowflake.

• Proficiency in SQL and No-SQL, including schema design, migrations, and optimizing read/write performance.

• In-depth data design skills encompassing No-SQL collections and indexing, relational normalization, and data warehousing facts and dimensions.

• Familiarity with dbt or similar transformation tools.

• Experience with data replication and CDC tools like Kafka source connectors, DMS, or Airbyte.

• Proficiency in Dagster or Airflow for pipeline scheduling, dependency management, and reliability.

• Experience with streaming data pipelines such as Flink.

• Working knowledge of time series data modeling.

• Understanding of geospatial data modeling and its applications.

• Extensive experience with cloud-native architectures, distributed systems, and production-grade software at scale.

• Production experience with AWS compute, storage, and observability services.

• Proficiency in infrastructure-as-code tools like CDK, SAM, Serverless Framework, or Terraform.

• Familiarity with deployment pipelines such as GitHub Actions or Bitbucket Pipelines.

• Direct experience with observability tools like CloudWatch, Datadog, New Relic, Prometheus, or Grafana.
