
Staff Backend Engineer, Database Automation – Go

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States, +1 more country.
• Design, develop, and oversee Go-based automation for PostgreSQL provisioning, configuration, upgrades, failover, scaling, and decommissioning.
• Create automation across infrastructure-as-code tools and cloud infrastructure, while assessing operator-driven methodologies.
• Employ AI agents in the implementation, assessment, and minimization of repetitive operational tasks.
• Develop automation and services for high-throughput, continuously available production workloads.
• Integrate compute, storage, networking, identity and access management, and managed data services across cloud providers into a unified PostgreSQL platform.
• Construct GitLab's PostgreSQL as a service platform featuring standardized provisioning and lifecycle management.
• Collaborate with product management, infrastructure, software delivery, and engineering teams.
• Investigate, design, and implement enhancements for PostgreSQL performance, scalability, and data integrity.
• Evaluate database automation and Go modifications for safety, maintainability, and performance.
• Document automation methodologies, PostgreSQL operational patterns, and platform guidelines.
• Create secure, repeatable automation for major PostgreSQL version upgrades and validate changes against production traffic.
• Manage services in production from end to end and utilize feedback to direct iterations.
• Professional experience in software engineering with PostgreSQL in large, complex production settings.
• Background in building or managing a database-as-a-service product.
• Expertise in Go, including designing, implementing, testing, and reviewing backend services.
• Experience in developing Kubernetes operators, controllers, or similar automation for the lifecycle of stateful services, particularly databases; comparable experience in database or infrastructure automation is acceptable.
• Familiarity with infrastructure as code practices.
• Understanding of high availability, replication, backups, and system-level performance trade-offs.
• Strong written communication skills and comfort in working asynchronously within an all-remote, distributed team.
• Self-motivated work style and effective organizational abilities; capacity to manage priorities as a solo contributor.
• Alignment with GitLab's values and operational principles.
• Ability to take ownership of the technical direction of a significant initiative and transform ambiguous challenges into actionable architecture and plans.
• Capability to influence beyond the immediate team, collaborate with database, infrastructure, and platform teams, and mentor fellow engineers.
• Familiarity with Ruby is a bonus but not mandatory.
