Staff Back-End Engineer – Search APIs

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Lead the technical strategy, implementation, and operational support for client-facing gRPC APIs and SDKs that facilitate provider search, ranking, and dynamic copay inquiries.

• Guide public API design choices concerning versioning, backward compatibility, field masks, CEL-based filtering, error semantics, and gRPC status code guidelines.

• Create and refine ranking and steering logic that balances relevance, network status, cost, client overrides, and plan-specific incentives.

• Architect for scalability and reliability under production conditions, addressing geofenced queries, rate limiting, retry and timeout budgets, and graceful degradation.

• Collaborate with product and partner engineering teams on external SDK and developer experience initiatives, projects, and strategic planning.

• Write and evaluate code and designs, establish technical direction, drive project execution, mentor engineers, and expand the team.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of experience in developing backend services and distributed systems.

• Extensive knowledge of search systems and architecture at scale.

• Hands-on experience in building or enhancing search or ranking systems in production.

• Proficiency with keyword/lexical search, vector/embedding-based retrieval, and LLM-driven query comprehension or reranking.

• Proven history of delivering public APIs and SDKs, including managing versioning, backward compatibility, and multi-language client libraries.

• Capability to set architectural guidelines, produce clear design documentation, and influence stakeholders without direct authority.

• Experience managing GCP data infrastructure at scale, including AlloyDB/Postgres, BigQuery, and Bigtable.

• Previous exposure to provider search, clinical/specialty matching, network steering, or benefits/copay logic within the healthcare or insurance sectors.

• Understanding of geospatial query patterns at scale.

• Experience in developing retrieval evaluation frameworks.

• Proficient in Go, gRPC, and protobuf in a production environment.

• Familiarity with Terraform/Terraform Cloud.

• Experience in a start-up environment.
