Software Engineering Manager, Java

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Illinois.

📋 Description

• Guide a team of software engineers in designing, constructing, and delivering operational claims systems for Allstate Dealer Services.

• Provide both technical and personnel leadership to various Agile teams responsible for developing, implementing, and supporting backend services and applications.

• Collaborate with product management, architecture, engineering leaders, and business stakeholders to set technical direction and achieve business goals.

• Build and nurture engineering talent through mentoring, coaching, performance evaluations, career development, and growth opportunities.

• Spearhead product discovery, portfolio planning, strategic planning, inception, iteration planning, backlog refinement, prioritization, and retrospectives.

• Establish and enhance product and platform architecture, design, and technical roadmaps.

• Provide leadership and oversight across Agile delivery teams, addressing technical challenges and eliminating delivery obstacles.

• Advocate for automated testing, code quality standards, CI/CD pipelines, observability, and DevOps principles.

• Drive secure, reliable, and scalable production operations while promoting operational excellence.

• Collaborate across product, engineering, architecture, security, and business functions to align technology investments with strategic objectives.

• Support workforce planning, recruitment, onboarding, succession planning, performance management, and talent development.

• Establish and track engineering metrics related to delivery, quality, reliability, and team health.

• Advise business and technology stakeholders on software engineering, cloud platforms, distributed systems, and organizational effectiveness.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 7 years of software engineering experience, including a background in leading engineering teams to deliver enterprise-scale applications and services.

• Proven experience in managing software engineers within Agile development settings.

• Strong knowledge of modern software architecture, microservices, distributed systems, APIs, cloud-native applications, and DevOps methodologies.

• Experience in delivering solutions utilizing Java, Spring Boot, and related enterprise technologies.

• Familiarity with building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines and engineering delivery processes.

• Experience supporting applications in production environments, focusing on reliability, observability, and operational excellence.

• Excellent leadership, communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management abilities.

• Experience in leading technical planning, estimation, prioritization, and execution activities.

• Demonstrated ability to attract, develop, coach, and retain engineering talent.

• Experience working closely with Product Management and business stakeholders to deliver customer-oriented solutions.

• Preferred experience in leading teams that develop enterprise applications using Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, and microservices architectures.

• Preferred experience managing engineers working on distributed systems, event-driven architectures, and high-volume transactional applications.

• Preferred familiarity with modern cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Kubernetes-based environments.

• Preferred understanding of object-oriented design, domain-driven design, API-first development, and secure coding practices.

• Preferred experience in establishing and managing CI/CD pipelines, automated testing strategies, infrastructure automation, and DevOps practices.

• Preferred experience with messaging and event streaming technologies such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, ActiveMQ, or similar platforms.

• Preferred experience with relational databases, NoSQL databases, and data integration patterns.

• Preferred experience leading application modernization initiatives, including monolith-to-microservice transformations and cloud migration projects.

• Preferred understanding of application observability, monitoring, logging, performance tuning, reliability engineering, and production support practices.

• Preferred experience in claims, insurance, warranty services, financial services, or other highly regulated sectors.

• Background investigation required.
