Software Engineering Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Lead a small team in developing AI solutions tailored for legal professionals.

• Collaborate with product, design, and customer-facing teams to pinpoint significant customer challenges and determine development priorities.

• Gain insights into the usage of Spellbook by legal professionals through direct customer interactions, analysis of product data, and firsthand observations.

• Establish technical direction and prioritize tasks based on customer impact, business value, technical risk, and long-term platform benefits.

• Oversee project delivery and ensure accountability for quality, reliability, and outcomes.

• Create prototypes, engage in architectural design and implementation, and review critical code and design elements.

• Experiment with and implement coding-agent and automation practices that enhance development speed or quality.

• Set standards for reviewing, testing, assessing, and operating software created by engineers and agents.

• Assist engineers in enhancing their technical judgment, product awareness, and effective utilization of AI.

• Contribute to Spellbook’s engineering strategy as AI evolves within software development.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of software development experience, including technical leadership in a startup, scale-up, or other dynamic environments.

• Proficient in system design and web development.

• Familiarity with JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Node, and AWS.

• Proven experience in leading the development and maintenance of production software.

• Regular interaction with coding agents or similar AI tools, with specific instances of enhancing development speed or quality.

• Capability to prototype, review code, assess technical options, and make practical architectural choices.

• Strong product intuition and a history of transforming vague customer issues into targeted plans and delivered products.

• Ability to balance immediate delivery needs with reliability, maintainability, and long-term technical considerations.

• Excellent communication skills and the ability to unify engineering, product, and design teams around decisions and trade-offs.

• Experience mentoring engineers and upholding high performance standards without introducing excessive processes.

• Must possess legal eligibility to work and reside in Canada at the time of application.

• Nice to have: experience in developing LLM-based products, agent workflows, or evaluation systems.

• Nice to have: knowledge of reliably and securely operating AI systems in production.

• Nice to have: a proven track record of launching large-scale products.

• Nice to have: experience as a founder or holding a role with extensive ownership.
