Software Engineering Manager – AI Data Engine

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Nevada, +2 more states.

📋 Description

• Assemble and guide a high-performing team of data and infrastructure engineers concentrating on Motional’s Data Stack.

• Establish team objectives, priorities, and a roadmap that aligns with the overall goals of the organization.

• Offer technical support, mentorship, and professional development opportunities to team members.

• Formulate the technical vision and strategy for storing metrics and producing ML datasets for extensive computer vision and behavioral models.

• Assess and analyze technologies and methodologies aimed at enhancing data loaders for training, metrics ingestion, and querying large datasets for dashboards and training purposes.

• Work collaboratively with ML research, the ML Training platform, and data engineering teams to understand their requirements and integrate effective solutions.

• Articulate complex technical concepts and strategies to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing engineering team.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related discipline.

• Over 8 years of professional experience in data platform engineering.

• At least 3 years of experience in a technical lead or management position, supervising 3-7 direct reports.

• Extensive experience managing large-scale data platforms (petabyte plus), including data warehouses, object storage, and ML training data repositories.

• Significant experience with workflow orchestration frameworks like Airflow or Step Functions.

• Proficient programming skills in Python.

• In-depth knowledge of data storage formats such as Parquet, Iceberg, and Lance, along with their respective trade-offs.

• Strong understanding of cloud infrastructure solutions and product offerings in AWS and GCP.

• Prior experience in constructing data warehouses or lakehouse architectures within a machine learning or robotics company.

• C++ experience is advantageous.

• Previous experience in autonomous vehicles is a plus.

• Familiarity with Bazel-based build systems is a bonus.
