Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the QA strategy for the POS application, back office, and payment systems, determining which components should be automated or manually tested and identifying any factors that may hinder a release.

• Develop and uphold automated test suites spanning unit, integration, end-to-end, API, and contract testing layers.

• Incorporate tests into GitHub Actions CI for pull requests and release candidates, striving to reduce flaky tests.

• Set up evidence-based release gates, regression results, upgrade testing, staged rollouts, and go/no-go criteria.

• Conduct testing on actual hardware and under various conditions, including Elo terminals, Android and firmware versions, card readers, scanners, printers, offline modes, unreliable networks, and overnight soak tests.

• Enhance payment quality through processor certification testing, handling refund and split-tender edge cases, managing reader disconnects, and addressing processor outages.

• Generate seeded test data, create isolated branch environments, and utilize emulators.

• Leverage AI tools to produce test cases and code, as well as to analyze crash logs and support tickets.

• Collaborate with support teams to replicate merchant-reported bugs by utilizing relevant register, app version, and transaction details.

• Monitor and report quality metrics, including escaped defects, crash-free sessions, release health, and merge-to-store time.

• Review test plans, mentor engineers on writing testable code, and elevate quality standards across the engineering team.

⛳️ Requirements

• 6+ years of experience in QA or software engineering in testing, including at least 2+ years as the senior or lead quality owner for a released product.

• Proven history of building test automation from the ground up, rather than merely maintaining an existing suite.

• Proficient coding skills in Kotlin, Java, Ruby, TypeScript, or Python.

• Practical experience with modern frameworks (Espresso, Maestro, Appium, Playwright, Cypress, or similar) and their implementation in CI.

• Experience in testing APIs, ensuring data integrity, and managing system integrations.

• Good judgment regarding risk assessment and decisions that may block releases.

• Ability to clearly articulate bug reports and release notes.

• Experience in POS, retail, or payments, including card-present testing, processor certification, or PCI-compliant testing practices.

• Familiarity with device fleet management, MDM, and product release processes.

• Experience with hardware peripherals such as card readers, barcode scanners, receipt printers, and cash drawers.

• Knowledge of Rails test tooling (RSpec, Capybara) or contract testing (Pact).

• Familiarity with feature flags (LaunchDarkly) and staged rollouts.

• Experience using release health and observability tools such as Crashlytics, PostHog, or Sentry.

• Proficiency with AI coding and testing tools, such as Claude Code, Cursor, or AI-assisted test generation.
