Senior Subject Matter Expert, Mechanical – Rolling Stock Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Manage engineering projects related to rolling stock from initial concept through to completion in the passenger rail sector, including the procurement of new vehicles and modifications to existing equipment.

• Supervise the technical components of rail and transportation projects.

• Support project teams by ensuring precision, adherence to schedules, and compliance with budgetary constraints.

• Act as a technical liaison with clients and stakeholders.

• Produce high-quality deliverables that are within budget and project scope.

• Provide guidance and mentorship to the team while collaborating closely with clients and partner organizations to meet project goals.

• Develop comprehensive project plans, design frameworks, specifications, analyses, calculations, reports, drawings, simulations, research studies, products, user manuals, and other related documentation.

• Ensure work products comply with QA/QC procedures and promote continuous improvement.

• Participate in client relationships, marketing initiatives, proposal development, and contract negotiations.

• Operate both independently and collaboratively as part of a team with subject matter experts and management consultants.

• Travel to oversee project implementation, including conducting vehicle inspections, which may require some overnight travel by land and air.

• Report directly to the Principal.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

• At least 15 years of experience in rail vehicle engineering, encompassing rolling stock design, production, testing, operations, and fleet management.

• Engineering background covering all significant rolling stock mechanical subsystems such as brakes, trucks, car body/CEM, doors, air conditioning, and passenger interior equipment. Structural engineering experience is highly preferred.

• Required experience with intercity, commuter, light, and heavy rail systems.

• Familiarity with regulatory bodies, including the FRA/FTA, concerning rail vehicle design and operations.

• Technical project management experience is essential.

• A P.E. license is preferred.

• Experience with low- and zero-emission technologies, such as batteries and hydrogen, in rail applications is beneficial.

• Ability to work at a computer workstation for up to 4 hours continuously.

• Ability to communicate via telephone for up to 3 hours each day.

• Capacity to sit for up to 3 hours without breaks during meetings.

• Ability to walk and stand for up to 4 hours without breaks during site visits and meetings.

• Capability to inspect rail vehicles at facilities, including pits, platforms, and vehicles in various stages of completion.

• All hired individuals must verify their identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete the necessary employment eligibility verification form upon hire.
