Senior Staff Engineer – Payments

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.

📋 Description

• Act as the primary tech lead for the newly established Payments squad within Saldo, which is part of the team's Billing and Payments Service.

• Take ownership of the squad's delivery outcomes and uphold engineering standards.

• Create specifications and design documentation.

• Evaluate ADRs and pull requests.

• Address complex technical challenges through coding and workflow management.

• Establish the architectural direction for the payments service.

• Define the squad's operational framework, balancing speed, quality, and resilience.

• Enhance payment accuracy and processing efficiency to minimize processing costs.

• Manage sequencing and dependencies among various teams.

• Diagnose throughput challenges and ensure squad activities are visible to stakeholders.

• Mentor junior engineers and collaborate with senior engineers on challenging issues.

• Identify promotion and hiring needs to the Service Manager; collaborate on personnel decisions.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience as a tech lead responsible for a squad's delivery and engineering standards.

• Demonstrated history of writing design documentation, reviewing PRs and ADRs, solving hands-on problems, and providing direction.

• Skill in balancing hands-on involvement with major technical challenges while coaching junior engineers.

• Experience in designing a team's operational processes from the ground up while ensuring a balance of speed, quality, and resilience.

• Background in managing cross-team sequencing and dependencies.

• Proficient in diagnosing throughput issues.

• Capability to establish technical direction amidst uncertainty.

• Experience in driving the resolution of technical blockers.

• Familiarity with payment systems (desirable).

• Background in enhancing cost-to-process or processing efficiency in a high-volume service (desirable).

• Experience in scaling a service beyond its initial version (desirable).

• Fluent in English, both spoken and written.
