Senior Software Engineer, MediaWiki Content Platform Team

📋 Description

• Design and implement enhancements to the wikitext processing infrastructure of Wikipedia.

• Balance aspects such as user experience, performance, backward compatibility, and maintainability.

• Collaborate with engineers, product managers, designers, client teams, and community members to iterate on new features.

• Develop PHP and JavaScript that supports a multitude of languages globally.

• Create and manage internet APIs utilizing server-side scripting languages.

• Monitor feature and quality characteristics by instrumenting components.

• Utilize caching and persistence technologies effectively.

• Support and advance wikitext, the markup language of Wikipedia.

• Maintain web services responsible for content rendering and transformation.

• Report to the engineering management team.


⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of professional experience in software engineering.

• Experience with parser generators, interpreters, language runtimes, compilers, or overseeing a language feature throughout a product cycle.

• Capability to lead complex technical projects from problem identification to implementation and delivery.

• Proficiency in making and articulating architectural decisions while navigating ambiguity.

• Experience in designing and maintaining reliable, high-performance software components utilized by other teams, products, or a large user base.

• Strong engineering practices, which include unit and integration testing, addressing security and code review feedback, and balancing architectural trade-offs.

• Ability to collaborate across team and organizational boundaries and resolve technical dependencies.

• Experience in mentoring fellow engineers.

• Clear communication skills in both synchronous and asynchronous channels.

• Self-motivated individual capable of completing projects with minimal guidance.

• Preferred working hours within the GMT-4 to GMT+2 timezone.

• Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctorate degree in computer science, software engineering, or another STEM field, or equivalent certification (preferred).

• Current work authorization in the employee’s location for non-U.S. employees.
