Senior Software Engineer – Machine Learning

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Develop and implement new types of machine learning models.

• Address feature and semantic discrepancies in relation to scikit-learn and Spark ML.

• Enhance machine learning performance at scale, focusing on approximate nearest-neighbor acceleration, distributed optimizer tuning, and algorithmic improvements on critical paths.

• Broaden SQL-level linear algebra functionalities and spectral transformations.

• Contribute to and enhance Ocient’s native query-plan architecture, allowing models to execute within the database instead of using a separate ML runtime.

• Compose design documents, tests, and comprehensive documentation.

• Explore behavioral divergences and collaborate with Product, architects, and customer-facing teams.

• Take ownership of significant roadmap components from start to finish.

• Achieve roadmap deliverables such as ARIMA, quantile regression, AutoML, and option parity with validated accuracy.

• Identify feature gaps through benchmarking and product analysis prior to customer impact.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of experience in building production software systems.

• Strong proficiency in C++ or equivalent systems-level work in Java/Scala, with a readiness to primarily work in C++.

• Practical experience in implementing or integrating machine learning models in production, including the development of training loops.

• In-depth understanding of gradient-based optimization, loss functions and gradients, numerical stability, feature scaling, and convergence behavior.

• Familiarity with frameworks such as scikit-learn, Spark ML, XGBoost, or similar.

• Exceptional attention to detail regarding correctness, edge cases, and behavioral consistency.

• Capacity to collaborate across teams and codebases, transforming ambiguous requirements into clear solutions.

• Experience in comparing or validating model behavior across various ML frameworks is considered exceptional for candidates.

• Experience with large-scale data systems, analytical databases, query planners, or distributed execution engines is seen as exceptional candidate experience.

• Exposure to optimization, spectral methods, causal inference, or probabilistic modeling is regarded as exceptional candidate experience.

• Experience with automatic differentiation or symbolic gradient generation is viewed as exceptional candidate experience.

• Familiarity with SQL internals, including AST manipulation, expression rewriting, or planner integration, is considered exceptional candidate experience.
