Senior Software Developer, Search

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Design and develop MaintainX’s comprehensive search and retrieval platform, encompassing indexing pipelines, ranking systems, and AI-driven query interfaces.

• Collaborate with product and domain experts to model search functionalities for work orders, assets, and procedures.

• Release initial versions, collect feedback, and make rapid improvements.

• Manage and enhance distributed systems for reliability, performance, and scalability.

• Guide architectural choices while balancing correctness, performance, and maintainability.

• Oversee the integration of search systems with upstream data sources.

• Investigate semantic search, vector retrieval, and AI-enhanced relevance through contemporary ML tools.

• Engage in on-call responsibilities during business hours.

• Lead platform engineering managers across various teams, communicate technical priorities to executive stakeholders, and coordinate with engineering leaders outside of Québec.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven hands-on experience in designing, building, and operating production-grade search systems from start to finish, including indexing, query execution, relevance tuning, and infrastructure management.

• Familiarity with technologies such as Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, Lucene, Solr, or comparable platforms.

• Knowledge of embeddings, chunking, and retrieval methodologies.

• Understanding of analyzers, BM25, shard sizing, cluster health, and relevance optimization techniques.

• Experience in taking systems from implementation to deployment and ongoing production operation.

• Background in working with backend services, data pipelines, and integration points.

• Proficient in English, both spoken and written, is essential.

• Experience in assessing and enhancing search relevance through qualitative analysis and quantitative metrics.

• Background in deploying AI-powered or LLM-integrated backend systems.

• Familiarity with tools such as GPT, Copilot, or Cursor.

• Understanding of multi-tenancy and data security, including ACLs, field-level access controls, and secure index partitioning.

• Experience in incorporating observability and success metrics into systems.
