This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Lead the commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting of protective relays.

• Supervise field demolition and construction efforts for relay replacement projects at generation plants, substations, and other locations.

• Operate vendor test sets such as Omicron, Doble, and Radian, utilizing vendor software or manual controls.

• Program, install, test, troubleshoot, certify, and verify revenue meters, check meters, and electronic data recorders.

• Carry out Factory Acceptance Testing and diagnose issues related to metering.

• Execute point-to-point metering and telemetry testing to ensure accurate wiring, data paths, and communication with head-end systems.

• Review and annotate Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), Three Line Diagrams (3LDs), schematics, and wiring diagrams for field troubleshooting purposes.

• Analyze engineering work packages and field conditions to pinpoint constructability, wiring, and commissioning challenges.

• Create or assist in the development of field mitigation strategies, document deviations, and coordinate necessary changes with the appropriate engineers.

• Prepare or assess test plans, commissioning procedures, job hazard analyses, test records, redlines, daily reports, deficiency lists, and final configuration backups.

• Coordinate field operations with engineers, contractors, owners, and operations teams.

• Connect to relays, meters, and RTUs both on-site and remotely to obtain settings, event files, configurations, and other relevant data.

• Aid in troubleshooting and event analysis using oscillography, sequence of event reports, live data, and on-site wiring.

• Develop and uphold standards, procedures, and safety practices for relaying and metering.

• Act as an authority in discipline-specific software and provide training and mentorship to engineers and technicians.

• Inspect relay and meter panels to ensure compliance with client requirements, applicable codes, and Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) standards.

• Assist with SCADA point-to-point checkouts, RTU, RTAC, OrionLX configuration reviews, and troubleshooting of DNP3, Modbus, and comparable protocols.

• Conduct work in accordance with Ulteig, client, and site-specific safety protocols.

• Estimate labor and equipment costs for budgeting purposes, maintain schedules, deliver progress reports, and operate independently in the field.

• Engage with clients to address their needs and foster long-term relationships.


⛳️ Requirements

• Associate degree, trade school certificate, or bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, electrical power, or relay/substation technology; OR equivalent technical training and practical experience in protective relaying and metering.

• Minimum of 5 years of testing and commissioning or related experience required.

• Strong foundational knowledge of power system fundamentals and basic theory.

• Proficient understanding of HV substation equipment and MV electrical apparatus, including station service, MV switchgear, and protective relaying.

• On-site commissioning experience, including CT/PT injection and verification, protective relay testing, protection scheme functional verification, CT/PT burden/load checks, and/or meter accuracy tests preferred.

• Field experience assisting with on-site demolition, construction, and hands-on troubleshooting of protection and control systems preferred.

• Familiarity with relay and meter test sets such as Omicron CMC, Doble F6000, Megger SMRT, Radian RW, WECO, and similar test sets is advantageous.

• Knowledge of SCADA systems and programming is a plus.

• Understanding of NEC (NFPA 70) and California Electrical Code (CEC) is beneficial.

• Proficiency in SEL Quickset, SEL AcSELerator RTAC, SEL SynchroWAVe, GE Enervista UR Setup, Schneider ION Setup, and similar vendor software is an asset.

• Competence in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and PDF markup or document-management software.

• Experience with digital tools, automation, or generative AI to enhance reporting and field workflows preferred.

• Familiarity with industry best practices and established safety regulations, including PPE inspections, hazard mitigation, and stop-work directives.

• Willingness to travel 50%-75% throughout the United States and work extended or irregular hours during outages and commissioning activities.

• Must be able to climb stairs and ladders, stand for prolonged periods, work indoors and outdoors under various conditions, and lift or carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.

• Valid driver’s license and the ability to meet company driving standards.

• Must possess permanent authorization to work in the U.S.

• NETA Electrical Testing Technician (ETT), NICET Electrical Power Testing (EPT), state electrician certification, and/or vendor training certificates preferred but not mandatory.
