Senior Relay Field Technician

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Utah.

📋 Description

• Conduct testing and routine maintenance on Transmission and Distribution substation power equipment.

• Perform testing on electro-mechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor relays.

• Assess pilot channel equipment, which includes power line carrier, pilot wire, transfer, transfer trip, fiber optic, CVTs, line tuners, and line traps.

• Evaluate controls and communications equipment.

• Read and accurately interpret substation drawings, such as single-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, panel wiring diagrams, and panel layout schematics.

• Assist in drafting procedures and/or test plans for maintenance and construction operations.

• Read and confirm voltage and current inputs to relays.

• Validate local and SCADA metering and alarms.

• Calibrate relays and execute local and SCADA trip testing.

• Confirm function switches.

• Diagnose and repair substation relaying and control equipment.

• Commission new substations, power equipment, relays, pilot channel equipment, controls, and communications devices.

• Organize, schedule, and execute testing activities efficiently and punctually without causing service interruptions.

• Provide technical project support to Field Service personnel.

⛳️ Requirements

• At least 5 years of field experience in commissioning, panel and equipment checkout, relay calibration, and testing and repairing substation relaying and control schemes.

• Preferred experience in substation design, construction, commissioning, and SCADA/Fault Data/SER/Integration-Automation equipment installation and testing.

• Understanding of 3-phase power systems and power system protection & control schemes.

• Proficient in using test equipment and test equipment software.

• Familiarity with test equipment, tools, and wiring applications.

• Ability to interpret wiring and elementary diagrams.

• Basic testing skills necessary to perform the outlined duties.

• Fundamental PC skills.

• Quick adaptability to learn and implement test procedures for various substation equipment.

• Strong communication skills, effectively engaging with diverse groups and adapting communication for the audience and the situation.

• Capability to learn and apply client’s switching procedures and safety protocols.

• Ability to reference and fulfill tasks as specified in relevant specifications.

• Willingness to perform regular fieldwork both indoors and outdoors.

• Excellent interpersonal, communication, business acumen, and management skills.

• Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

• Proficient in English communication, including reading and writing, due to safety-related materials, documentation, and client interactions.
