Senior Power BI Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Serbia.

📋 Description

• Assess the current BI architecture, including data ingestion pipelines, warehouse structures, queries, and Power BI reports, identifying areas for enhancing performance, reliability, and cost efficiency.

• Analyze the existing technology stack and explore alternative solutions for data warehousing, ingestion, change data capture, transformation, and BI reporting.

• Conduct practical proofs of concept to evaluate shortlisted solutions and offer recommendations based on cost, performance, implementation effort, and migration risk.

• Optimize AWS Glue jobs and implement near-real-time data replication from PostgreSQL to Amazon Redshift while minimizing disruption to production systems.

• Review and enhance Redshift schemas, data models, distribution and sort keys, workload management, and query performance.

• Develop and refine data marts for key business areas.

• Review and enhance the Power BI reporting environment, determining which dashboards and datasets to keep, consolidate, or retire.

• Construct a certified Power BI semantic model with consistent definitions for essential business metrics, including revenue, subscribers, and costs.

• Redesign executive dashboards using the certified model, allowing business stakeholders to explore data by region, product, channel, and time period.

• Implement monitoring, alerting, and data quality checks to enhance pipeline reliability and data freshness visibility.

• Document the architecture, data models, and operational procedures.

• Facilitate knowledge transfer to the internal team.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 7 years of experience in Data Engineering or BI Engineering, including at least two complete BI stack reviews or rebuilds.

• Extensive hands-on experience with Amazon Redshift at scale, encompassing data modeling, distribution and sort keys, workload management, query optimization, and cost reduction.

• Strong understanding of PostgreSQL internals related to replication, including logical replication, WAL, replication slots, and the effects of replication on production workloads.

• Practical experience with AWS Glue (PySpark) and at least one change data capture (CDC) method, such as AWS DMS, zero-ETL integration, or Debezium.

• Proficient in Power BI, including semantic models, DAX, star schemas, refresh modes, row-level security, and managing large reporting environments.

• Experience with various data warehouse and BI platforms, capable of evaluating alternatives and recommending optimal solutions based on business and technical needs.

• Strong skills in SQL and Python.

• Proven record of delivering measurable improvements in data freshness, query performance, infrastructure costs, or reporting capabilities.

• Excellent communication and documentation skills, with the capacity to articulate technical trade-offs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Availability for overlap with US Pacific Time.

• Experience with dbt or comparable data transformation and testing frameworks.

• Familiarity with Terraform or similar infrastructure-as-code tools.

• Knowledge of data quality tools such as Great Expectations, Soda, or AWS Glue Data Quality.

• Relevant certifications such as AWS Data Engineer – Associate, Microsoft PL-300, DP-600, or equivalent.

• Experience in subscription-based businesses or consumer-device industries, especially related to subscriber and churn metrics.
