Senior Manager, Data Science

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Tennessee.

📋 Description

• Define the vision and multi-year strategy for data science, machine learning, and agentic AI aligned with business objectives.

• Identify lucrative AI opportunities and present investment cases to leadership.

• Monitor advancements in large language models (LLMs), agents, and fine-tuning to assess appropriate adoption timing.

• Transform vaguely defined concepts into well-scoped initiatives with specific goals, milestones, and success metrics.

• Transition projects from conception to prototyping to production while taking full responsibility for outcomes.

• Recruit, build, and develop a high-performing team of data scientists and machine learning engineers.

• Provide mentorship to team members through one-on-one sessions, career development plans, and constructive feedback, fostering future leaders.

• Cultivate a culture of ownership, experimentation, and high standards.

• Establish standards and review designs for deep learning, GPU, and distributed model training.

• Lead the strategy for LLMs, including prompting, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) utilizing LoRA and QLoRA.

• Ensure thorough model evaluation and manage GPU expenditure effectively.

• Design the architecture for AWS agentic systems using Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, SageMaker, Lambda, EventBridge, ECS, and CloudWatch.

• Advocate for MLOps practices, including the use of Docker, Terraform, CI/CD, and production monitoring.

• Establish guidelines for agent permissions, data privacy, and human oversight.

• Collaborate with product, data engineering, and platform leaders to align on priorities and roadmap.

• Articulate vision, trade-offs, and results to both executives and non-technical audiences.

• Manage the team using agile methodologies, including sprint planning, backlog prioritization, and retrospectives.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 8 years in data science or machine learning, with at least 3 years in leadership roles involving teams of data scientists or ML engineers, along with experience in developing agentic systems.

• Proven history of establishing a technical vision and executing it, preferably with new AI products or capabilities from conception to production.

• Comprehensive knowledge of the practical deployment of agents in production via AgentCore, aligning with the organization’s agentic AI strategy.

• A self-motivated individual who excels in ambiguous situations and propels initiatives forward without requiring extensive guidance.

• Profound understanding of deep learning and large-scale GPU training, including distributed training methodologies.

• Strong expertise in LLM fine-tuning techniques, including PEFT, LoRA, and QLoRA, as well as agentic AI architecture.

• Familiarity with AWS machine learning and serverless services, including SageMaker, Bedrock AgentCore, Lambda, EventBridge, ECS, as well as Docker and Terraform.

• Experience in leading agile teams and managing projects involving multiple stakeholders.

• Exceptional communication skills with the ability to influence product, engineering, and executive stakeholders.

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, statistics, mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

• Must successfully complete a background check.

• Must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time, permanent basis without current or future sponsorship.

• Preferred: experience in establishing a data science or AI function from the ground up, startup or founder experience, presenting strategies to executive leadership, a Master’s or PhD in a quantitative discipline, familiarity with RAG, vector databases, and agent frameworks, responsible AI practices, and managing cloud and GPU budgets.
