Senior Data Scientist, NLP, Applied AI

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom, +11 more countries.

📋 Description

• Design and develop NLP enrichment pipelines to extract entities, classifications, claims, and summaries from scientific full-text on a large scale.

• Evaluate traditional NLP methods, embedding-based retrieval, LLM prompting, and fine-tuned smaller models for their extraction and enrichment capabilities.

• Determine the best approaches based on evaluation results, cost considerations, and operational trade-offs.

• Collaborate with subject-matter experts and vendors to create golden evaluation sets.

• Select evaluation metrics while balancing speed, quality, and cost.

• Contribute to the development of agentic AI applications that analyze enriched scientific corpora.

• Influence how agents substantiate and justify their responses.

• Engage directly with editors, product managers, and engineers.

• Translate stakeholder feedback into actionable modeling tasks.

• Take full ownership of models, evaluations, code, production releases, and overall outcomes from start to finish.

⛳️ Requirements

• Robust NLP expertise encompassing LLMs, transformers, embeddings, retrieval, NER, classification, and sequence labeling.

• Proven experience in building evaluations and learning from their outcomes.

• Proficient in Python programming.

• Comfortable working in exploratory notebooks as well as production repositories.

• Capable of comparing different modeling approaches and justifying decisions based on evaluations, cost estimates, and operational trade-offs.

• Experience with scientific or scholarly text is a plus.

• Familiarity with AWS services, including S3, Batch, Lambda, and SageMaker is advantageous.

• Knowledge of Parquet or Iceberg data lake patterns is a plus.

• Experience in deploying LLMs within production cost and latency constraints is desirable.

• Exposure to agentic AI applications, including tool usage, multi-step reasoning, guardrails, and trajectory evaluation is beneficial.
