This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Illinois.
• Direct the Data Engineering team and establish the technical vision for the data platform.
• Take ownership of the architecture, reliability, performance, and ongoing development of Snowflake, PostgreSQL, and data pipelines.
• Spearhead the transition to a Medallion architecture, setting standards for data ingestion, transformation, modeling, testing, documentation, and consumption.
• Manage and enhance the modern data stack, which includes Snowflake, dbt, Fivetran, Meltano, PostgreSQL, AWS, and associated technologies.
• Collaborate with application engineering teams on the design of transactional databases, schema modifications, performance optimization, scalability, and reliability.
• Engage with Engineering, Analytics, Product, Finance, Risk, Marketing, and other business units to transform data requirements into reusable solutions.
• Establish engineering practices that focus on data quality, automated testing, observability, lineage, security, documentation, and incident response.
• Enhance self-service data access.
• Monitor and fine-tune the platform for optimal performance, scalability, and cost efficiency.
• Develop a long-term roadmap that balances current business demands with future platform requirements, including AI applications.
• Guide, mentor, and cultivate a proficient team of Data Engineers.
• Set technical standards and expectations while empowering engineers with ownership.
• Engage in architecture and design discussions and offer technical support as necessary.
• Assist in prioritizing tasks based on business impact, technical risk, reliability, and long-term value.
• Foster a culture centered on data quality, testing, documentation, and operational reliability.
• Articulate technical decisions, tradeoffs, risks, and investments to both technical and non-technical teams.
• Minimum of 6 years of experience in Data Engineering, Data Platform Engineering, Database Engineering, or a related discipline.
• At least 2 years of experience leading or managing Data Engineers or other technical teams.
• Extensive experience with Snowflake, dbt, SQL, and contemporary ELT or ETL architectures.
• Deep understanding of PostgreSQL or comparable relational databases, encompassing schema design, indexing, query performance, and reliability.
• Familiarity with data ingestion and integration tools such as Fivetran, Meltano, or equivalent technologies.
• Experience with dimensional modeling, Medallion architecture, or other modern warehouse design methodologies.
• Strong knowledge of data quality, automated testing, observability, lineage, governance, and security.
• Experience managing cloud-based data platforms, with insight into performance and cost considerations.
• Ability to conceptualize at both the architectural and implementation levels when necessary.
• Excellent communication skills and the capability to collaborate effectively across Engineering, Analytics, business teams, and leadership.
• Proficiency in Python or Ruby for automation, tooling, or data processing.
• Experience in financial services or another regulated sector.
• Background in supporting analytics or AI applications.
• Experience with data catalogs, data contracts, or master data management.
• Proven experience leading a significant modernization effort for a warehouse or data platform.
• Experience utilizing AI and automation to enhance engineering productivity, monitoring, documentation, or data quality.
