This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Oversee the creation of species range maps for all marine and anadromous taxa, ensuring adherence to the FWS Range Mapping Standard Operating Procedure.
• Acquire and review the FWS Range Mapping SOP prior to or at the start of the project.
• Compile and normalize spatial data derived from cloud data platform outputs.
• Implement transformations of coordinate reference systems and standardize spatial formats.
• Validate spatial intersections against authoritative geographic layers.
• Address changing habitat boundaries and overlapping Critical Habitat designations.
• Coordinate iterative review cycles of range maps with FWS Ecological Services and NOAA Fisheries Subject Matter Experts (SMEs).
• Integrate feedback to produce updated versions of the maps.
• Generate QA documentation for each range map produced.
• Ensure that maps fulfill SOP acceptance criteria prior to submission for governmental approval.
• Liaise with FWS Ecological Services for the sign-off on the Range Map Set deliverable.
• Assist in updating range maps post-production as a part of operational handoff documentation.
• A bachelor's degree and 8 years of professional experience, or a master's degree and 6 years of professional experience, or an associate's degree and 10 years of professional experience, or a high school diploma/equivalent and 12 years of professional experience.
• U.S. Citizenship is mandatory.
• Capability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
• All work must be conducted within the United States.
• Extensive experience with GIS, particularly in species range mapping or federal environmental applications.
• Direct familiarity with the FWS Range Mapping SOP or comparable federal range mapping standards.
• Proficient in ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar GIS platforms.
• Skilled in Python for GIS automation and spatial data processing, including ArcPy or comparable scripting libraries.
• Proficient in SQL for querying and validating spatial data within cloud data platforms.
• Experience in coordinate reference system transformations and spatial data normalization.
• Background in conducting spatial intersection validation and Critical Habitat analysis.
• Strong QA documentation abilities for geospatial deliverables.
• Preferred: Experience with NOAA Fisheries marine or anadromous species range data.
• Preferred: Familiarity with Databricks or cloud data platforms for retrieving spatial data.
• Preferred: Experience in coordinating formal government deliverable approvals.
• Preferred: GISP certification or an equivalent qualification.
