Senior Generator Systems Specialist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Supervise the installation, commissioning, and configuration of generator systems within data centers.

• Aid in the integration of backup generators with UPS and automatic transfer switches.

• Lead regular inspections and preventive maintenance to ensure readiness for emergencies.

• Oversee the testing and monitoring of generator performance, which includes load testing, fuel systems, exhaust systems, and battery charging systems.

• Create and maintain plans for generator faults, deficiencies, wear monitoring, and corrective actions.

• Remotely diagnose and troubleshoot backup generators and associated power systems during scheduled maintenance and emergencies.

• Communicate necessary remediation steps to site teams or local contractors.

• Address power outages and failures, facilitating the transition between primary and backup power sources.

• Utilize remote monitoring systems to oversee generator performance, fuel levels, and critical alerts.

• Assist in the preparation of system status, usage, and maintenance reports.

• Collaborate with data center operations teams during power tests, upgrades, and emergency response drills.

• Educate team members on generator operation, maintenance procedures, and safety protocols.

• Suggest and implement enhancements for efficiency, capacity upgrades, and the adoption of newer generator technologies.

• Support backup power preparation for data center capacity growth and expansion initiatives.

• Ensure accurate records of service, repairs, inspections, and generator performance data.

• Confirm that all work adheres to regulations, industry standards, and internal data center policies.

• Coordinate with compliance and local site teams to maintain current certifications and warranties.


⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 7 years of hands-on experience in generator maintenance and troubleshooting in critical environments such as data centers, hospitals, or industrial settings.

• Comprehensive knowledge of data center power infrastructure, including generators, UPS, ATS, switchgear, and electrical systems.

• Strong understanding of diesel, gas-powered, and hybrid generators as well as related technologies; familiarity with Caterpillar, Cummins, Kohler, and MTU is preferred.

• Experience with remote monitoring and diagnostic systems for generators and critical power systems.

• Familiarity with data center power redundancy schemes and topologies, including 2N, block redundant, and distributed redundant configurations.

• Capability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and blueprints.

• Experience in operating load banks, automatic transfer switches, and power monitoring systems.

• Knowledge of backup generator fuel delivery systems and management practices, including fuel pump configurations, redundancy requirements, bulk storage, belly tank usage, fuel testing, and storage protocols.

• Experience integrating power systems in mission-critical environments.

• Ability to remain calm and collected in high-pressure emergency situations while maintaining uptime.

• Willingness and capability to provide on-call and 24/7 support as needed.

• Ability to lift over 50 pounds when handling heavy equipment.

• Openness to working indoors, outdoors, and in generator enclosures.

• Ability to manage approximately 25% travel commitments.

• High School diploma or equivalent is required.

• An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related field is preferred.

• Certifications in electrical systems, power generation, and/or safety are preferred, such as electrical licenses, OSHA, NFPA 70E, or manufacturer-specific certifications.
