Senior Engineering Manager

📋 Description

• Lead and nurture engineering teams through effective coaching, constructive feedback, performance management, and career development.

• Cultivate senior engineers, technical leaders, and emerging talent.

• Empower technical leads to prototype and validate solutions, make informed technical choices, and drive initiatives from initial discovery to implementation.

• Recruit, onboard, retain, and develop engineering talent.

• Collaborate on team structure, capacity planning, resource allocation, and talent development.

• Oversee execution and delivery across designated engineering teams or a larger engineering domain.

• Enhance operational practices, planning, backlog readiness, delivery tracking, and resolution of blockers.

• Identify and address cross-team dependencies and systemic delivery challenges.

• Utilize streamlined workflows, automated reporting, and engineering metrics to enhance execution.

• Communicate progress, risks, resource requirements, and delivery outcomes to Engineering leadership and stakeholders.

• Provide technical leadership in alignment with architecture, quality, reliability, and technical strategy.

• Assess technical approaches and guide architectural and technical decision-making.

• Maintain active technical involvement to guide teams and make well-informed decisions.

• Promote enhancements to engineering practices, architecture, tools, and methodologies.

• Ensure operational responsibility, sustainable on-call practices, staffing, and accountability for production.

• Establish and implement SLOs, error budgets, and reliability metrics.

• Lead coordination for major incidents, decision-making, escalation processes, and stakeholder communication.

• Drive postmortems and track action items until completion.

• Collaborate with Product and cross-functional stakeholders on problem statements, business context, priorities, and success criteria.

• Advocate for AI-assisted development for solution exploration, planning, ticket creation, development, and workflows.

• Enable engineers to engage earlier in discovery, requirements gathering, technical solutioning, and technical work definition.

• Identify opportunities for AI, automation, and enhanced engineering practices to boost productivity.


⛳️ Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering experience, including hands-on experience in enterprise or SaaS settings.

• 4+ years of experience in engineering management and/or people management.

• Proven experience leading multiple engineering teams or initiatives that involve various teams and stakeholders.

• Demonstrated ownership of team execution and delivery, including planning, prioritization, dependency management, risk identification, and workflow enhancements.

• Experience collaborating with senior Engineering and Product leadership.

• Experience managing production services, including on-call responsibilities, SLOs, incident responses, and postmortems.

• Familiarity with collaborative Product and Engineering environments involving discovery, requirements definition, technical solutioning, and delivery.

• Strong technical judgment with the ability to guide design decisions.

• Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.

• Experience with cloud platform management and architecture, preferably Azure.

• Proficient in Java/Kotlin development for backend services and microservices.

• Experience leveraging or leading teams using AI-assisted software development tools and workflows.

• Recent hands-on coding experience is preferred.

• Familiarity with Kubernetes and container orchestration is a plus.

• Experience with the React framework is a plus.

• Experience designing and implementing microservice architectures for distributed systems and reliability is a plus.

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
