Senior Engineer – Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of significant components of Buildkite’s AWS and multi-cluster Kubernetes platform, overseeing everything from design to production operations.

• Create reusable, self-service automation solutions for the provisioning and management of secure, consistent, and isolated platform environments.

• Provide regional architecture, request routing, disaster recovery solutions, and validated failover capabilities.

• Enhance Kubernetes networking, including upgrades, patching, scaling, observability, capacity management, and recovery processes.

• Ensure infrastructure and deployments are more secure through secure defaults, progressive delivery, automated guardrails, clear health signals, and rapid rollback mechanisms.

• Collaborate with product teams to troubleshoot distributed system issues across service, datastore, network, and platform domains.

• Transform incidents, capacity constraints, and operational signals into lasting engineering enhancements.

• Develop well-tested, observable, documented, and manageable systems; facilitate design discussions, conduct code reviews, share insights, and mentor fellow engineers.

⛳️ Requirements

• Exceptional communication skills and effective collaboration in a distributed team environment.

• Ability to influence technically: managing ambiguity, articulating trade-offs, building consensus, and driving initiatives across teams.

• Proven experience in building CI/CD pipelines, internal platforms, or self-service functionalities.

• Experience in managing production systems through periods of growth, failures, migrations, and incidents.

• Expertise in production AWS, Kubernetes, and infrastructure-as-code practices.

• Proficient in managing production infrastructure using Terraform or similar tools, including DNS, IAM, monitoring, and secrets management.

• Strong emphasis on reliability practices, including observability, incident response, recovery testing, and operational enhancements.

• Experience in developing platforms or self-service capabilities that facilitate secure and reliable delivery for engineers.

• Additional valuable experience with multi-region or multi-cluster systems, traffic routing, disaster recovery, progressive delivery, deployment guardrails, rollback strategies, authentication, identity management, compliance controls, relational databases, caches, or queues.
