This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Florida.
• Create and implement an editorial strategy for rare disease conferences, ensuring alignment with audience demands and business goals.
• Identify significant research, clinical advancements, emerging trends, technologies, and other noteworthy stories.
• Submit timely and precise articles under the pressure of conference deadlines.
• Oversee conference planning, including editorial calendars, coverage priorities, freelance staffing and assignments, budgets, as well as pre- and post-conference content.
• Attend selected conferences in person to report on keynote presentations, new data, and patient or advocacy news in real time.
• Collaborate with advocacy, editorial, news, audience development, commercial, sales, community, and patient advisory teams.
• Manage the complete editorial process from story ideation and assignment through to reporting, editing, fact-checking, and publication.
• Assign, edit, and publish news articles, research summaries, interviews, and analyses.
• Simplify complex scientific information into clear, accurate, and engaging narratives.
• Conduct interviews with researchers, clinicians, advocacy groups, and industry leaders.
• Coordinate onsite reporters, freelancers, and contributors.
• Act as the senior editorial lead at significant conferences and drive fast-paced news coverage.
• Recruit, assess, and onboard freelance reporters covering medical and scientific conferences.
• Oversee freelancer budgets, deadlines, and performance.
• Identify important sessions, connect with sources, and ensure coverage aligns with community priorities.
• Integrate conference coverage with broader editorial planning and immediate news needs.
• Utilize audience feedback to enhance conference coverage strategy.
• Analyze coverage performance and continually refine strategy based on audience engagement and community feedback.
• Over 5 years of journalism experience.
• Proven track record of covering medical, scientific, or health-related conferences.
• Demonstrated experience in managing or editing freelance writers.
• Strong news judgment with the ability to quickly identify newsworthy angles, even under deadline pressure.
• Excellent editing skills with a keen eye for accuracy and adherence to AP style.
• Experience in building relationships with researchers, clinicians, patient advocates, and advocacy organizations.
• Strong project management capabilities, able to handle multiple freelancers, conferences, and deadlines concurrently.
• Comfortable and effective in cross-functional collaboration with editorial, advocacy, community, and sales teams.
• Willingness and ability to travel frequently to attend conferences, anticipated at 3–4 conferences annually.
• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• Preferred: Familiarity with the rare disease, chronic illness, or broader patient advocacy landscape.
• Preferred: Experience with a content management system and basic multimedia reporting, including photo, video, or social reporting from the field.
• Fully remote work structure.
• Travel to attend 3–4 in-person conferences each year.
