Senior Director, Software Engineer

📋 Description

• Define and take ownership of the software engineering vision, technical roadmap, delivery priorities, and operational model for the Bioinformatics Software Engineering team.

• Lead, cultivate, and mentor a high-performing team of software and bioinformatics engineers.

• Set team objectives, resource allocations, delivery commitments, and performance standards.

• Communicate software engineering priorities, risks, dependencies, and trade-offs to senior leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.

• Supervise the design, development, implementation, maintenance, and operational support of production-grade software platforms, bioinformatics workflows, data systems, and reporting solutions for clinical genomic diagnostics.

• Drive the modernization of legacy systems, workflow orchestration, automation, containerization, cloud or HPC compute strategies, data integration, and enhancements in software architecture.

• Establish operational support frameworks, escalation procedures, incident response protocols, root-cause analysis, and post-release monitoring practices.

• Collaborate with R&D, clinical laboratories, quality assurance, operations, product management, data teams, and executive stakeholders on technical roadmaps and delivery strategies.

• Lead the prioritization, scope definition, dependency management, timeline planning, and governance for software initiatives.

• Guide research algorithms, analytical prototypes, scripts, and proof-of-concept tools into validated production workflows.

• Define and implement software development lifecycle standards, quality practices, compliance controls, documentation, validation, and release governance.

• Establish metrics for software quality, delivery performance, system reliability, incidents, technical debt, and continuous improvement.

• Promote responsible adoption of AI-driven engineering, workflow automation, decision-support tools, documentation, code assistance, issue triage, and operational support capabilities.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genomics, Data Science, or a related quantitative or technical discipline.

• 12+ years of experience in software engineering, bioinformatics software development, clinical genomics technology, data platform development, or similar computational technology roles.

• 7+ years of experience in leading software engineering teams, which includes direct management of personnel, performance management, mentoring, recruiting, organizational planning, and overseeing technical leads or managers.

• Demonstrated experience in defining software engineering strategy, technical roadmaps, delivery priorities, resource plans, and operational models.

• Proficient in leading the development and support of production-grade software systems, bioinformatics workflows, data platforms, workflow automation, or reporting applications utilized in clinical, healthcare, laboratory, or regulated settings.

• Extensive knowledge of software architecture, system design, API design, data integration, database-backed applications, workflow orchestration, scalable computing, and modern software development lifecycle methodologies.

• Experience in requirements management, code review, automated testing, CI/CD, validation support, documentation, release management, incident management, and production support.

• Practical understanding of NGS data, clinical genomics workflows, bioinformatics pipelines, genomic data formats, variant analysis workflows, laboratory interfaces, or diagnostic reporting systems.

• Experience in transforming research prototypes, analytical methods, scripts, or proof-of-concept tools into scalable, tested, validated, documented, and maintainable production workflows.

• Familiarity with quality, regulatory, privacy, security, traceability, and audit-readiness requirements in regulated software environments.

• Technical proficiency in Git-based development, Linux, containerization, workflow orchestration, cloud or HPC computing, databases, APIs, and monitoring or observability tools.

• Ability to articulate complex technical concepts, delivery risks, architectural trade-offs, and operational priorities to a diverse audience.

• Master’s degree or PhD is preferred.

• Preferred experience with Nextflow, Docker, Kubernetes, cloud platforms, HPC environments, microservices, API-driven architectures, data lakes, data warehouses, enterprise data integration, AI-enabled engineering tools, and CAP/CLIA-regulated environments.
