This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States, +4 more countries.
• Lead and manage the commercial, privacy, and product legal functions at Backblaze.
• Act as a strategic business partner collaborating with Sales, Product, Engineering, Security, and Compliance teams.
• Direct commercial contracting efforts and take ownership of complex, high-value, and strategic transactions.
• Draft, review, and negotiate enterprise SaaS agreements, Master Service Agreements (MSAs), Statements of Work (SOWs), partnership and channel agreements, reseller agreements, professional services agreements, consulting agreements, and related technology transactions.
• Offer strategic advice on intricate or high-risk negotiations.
• Provide counsel on global privacy and data protection issues, including GDPR, CCPA, and other relevant regulations.
• Oversee data protection agreements, privacy terms, and associated contractual frameworks.
• Advise Product and Engineering teams regarding product design, feature development, and launches.
• Counsel on data usage, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, intellectual property, open source, and regulatory matters.
• Provide guidance on commercial, privacy, and contractual matters pertaining to AI features and AI-driven workloads.
• Develop and enhance commercial playbooks, templates, policies, and negotiation frameworks.
• Optimize contracting processes through AI-enabled contracting and legal tools.
• Collaborate with Legal Operations on tools, workflows, and reporting mechanisms.
• Deliver training and guidance on contracting, privacy obligations, and risk awareness.
• Lead, manage, mentor, coach, and develop legal professionals.
• Set priorities, allocate tasks, and support team planning, resource allocation, and process enhancements.
• Report directly to the Head of Legal & Compliance.
• Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and active membership in the U.S. bar in good standing.
• A minimum of 10 years of relevant legal experience.
• Significant experience in negotiating and managing complex technology transactions, including enterprise SaaS agreements and strategic partnerships.
• Valuable in-house legal experience, ideally within a fast-growing technology or SaaS company.
• Strong comprehension of SaaS business models, cloud services, and technology transactions.
• Extensive experience supporting enterprise sales initiatives, partner and channel relationships, and global commercial operations.
• Working knowledge of global privacy and data protection laws, such as GDPR and CCPA.
• Experience advising product and engineering teams throughout the product development lifecycle.
• Familiarity with, or a genuine willingness to gain fluency in, AI and its legal, privacy, and commercial implications.
• Proficiency in utilizing AI tools to enhance efficiency.
• Previous experience in managing, mentoring, and developing legal team members, or demonstrated readiness for people management responsibilities.
• Exceptional business judgment and the capability to manage competing priorities effectively.
• Proven ability to lead, influence, and collaborate across various functions and levels of seniority.
• Strong communication skills that are clear and effective.
