
Senior Director, Customer Identity and Access Management

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Oversee three engineering teams through direct Engineering Managers while also supporting two Principal Engineers.
• Take ownership of the strategy, execution, and advancement of Zillow's customer identity platform.
• Develop and implement a customer identity roadmap spanning 2 to 3 years.
• Manage workforce planning, organizational structure, recruitment, succession strategies, and leadership growth.
• Oversee budget management, tooling portfolio, and vendor relationships.
• Represent the Customer Identity and Access Management (CIAM) at the executive level, converting identity architecture and risks into business implications.
• Integrate authentication across the various brands, surfaces, and acquisitions of Zillow Group.
• Enhance a commercial Identity Provider to fulfill consumer experience, scalability, and latency needs.
• Provide SDKs, reference implementations, and documentation for authentication integrations.
• Define the direction for multifactor authentication (MFA), step-up and conditional access, session management, and account recovery.
• Collaborate with Information Security, Privacy, Legal, and Compliance teams on identity controls and regulatory requirements.
• Lead the design and implementation of a fine-grained authorization platform.
• Establish authorization models, policy creation, migration strategies, and audit capabilities.
• Promote adoption across partner organizations and phase out bespoke access logic.
• Expand centralized Customer and Identity services with well-defined ownership and canonical sources of truth.
• Collaborate with Product, Data, and downstream teams to delineate service boundaries.
• Ensure correct identity resolution, data lifecycle management, and privacy adherence.
• Maintain accountability for execution, quality, availability, latency, cost, and sustainable on-call practices.
• 12+ years of experience in high-volume engineering.
• Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience through managers in a technology organization.
• Background in software or platform engineering.
• Extensive knowledge of identity and access management concepts including authentication, authorization, MFA, conditional access, and session and token management.
• Strong proficiency in OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, SAML, and JWT.
• Experience with commercial IAM platforms such as Auth0, Okta, or Ping Identity.
• Proven experience in delivering platform capabilities utilized by multiple teams and fostering adoption.
• Significant cloud experience with AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, or similar platforms.
• Familiarity with large-scale application architectures.
• Ability to foster alignment across various VP-level organizations.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Proven track record in hiring, mentoring, and developing engineers and managers.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
