Senior Database Reliability Engineer – DBRE

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the durability, recoverability, and performance of the Postgres/RDS fleet across all environments.

• Oversee replication, failover, backup and restore processes, as well as storage behavior under load.

• Implement restore-tested coverage for every production database.

• Conduct timed failover drills and assess RPO/RTO for each tier.

• Manage retention and cleanup policies, data-layer access control, encryption practices, and the location of sensitive data.

• Analyze issues such as lock contention, WAL throughput, replica lag, bloat, index maintenance, and write amplification.

• Collaborate with the team to enhance database observability.

• Expand AI-assisted operations tools, including health-check functionalities and migration PR evaluations.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of five years of experience running production PostgreSQL at significant scale, preferably on RDS or Aurora.

• In-depth understanding of PostgreSQL internals: replication, WAL mechanics, MVCC and vacuum behavior, query planning, and performance optimization.

• Proven experience managing the entire data lifecycle, encompassing retention, backup and restore, access control, and security measures.

• Solid disaster-recovery experience, including designing failover strategies and conducting drills.

• Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code practices using Terraform or similar tools.

• Proficient scripting skills in Python, Bash, and SQL.

• Strong Linux skills.

• Understanding of cloud storage and IOPS characteristics.

• SRE experience, including SLOs and conducting blameless postmortems.

• Excellent technical writing abilities, including creating runbooks and decision records.
