Senior Counsel – Biotech Patent Law

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +1 more state.

📋 Description

• Create, implement, and manage a comprehensive global intellectual property strategy aimed at safeguarding Amgen’s therapeutic products and product candidates.

• Safeguard formulations, process development, and manufacturing methods associated with Amgen’s pipeline and existing products.

• Collaborate closely with Amgen scientists to pinpoint patentable innovations.

• Prepare, file, and prosecute patent applications internationally.

• Perform prior art searches.

• Evaluate patents and develop freedom-to-operate analyses.

• Conduct IP due diligence for licensing, research collaborations, and acquisition initiatives.

• Aid in drafting and negotiating IP terms in transactional agreements.

• Offer legal guidance and support to R&D and business partners on matters related to intellectual property.

• Assist with litigation-related activities and engage in challenges or defenses of patents in PTAB proceedings, opposition proceedings, and other venues.

• Operate independently, as part of legal teams, and in cross-functional research and business teams across various regions.

⛳️ Requirements

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Master of Laws (LL.M.) from a recognized law school.

• Licensed to practice law in a U.S. jurisdiction.

• Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

• A minimum of six (6) years of experience in patent or intellectual property law within the biopharma or life sciences sectors.

• Preferred: Ten (10) or more years of experience in patent or intellectual property law with a focus on the biopharma or life sciences domain, including pre-JD experience as a patent agent.

• Familiarity with U.S. and international intellectual property law related to biotechnology.

• Experience in patent preparation and prosecution pertaining to nucleic acid therapeutics.

• Proven track record in conducting IP due diligence for licensing and research partnerships.

• Skilled in drafting and negotiating IP clauses in agreements.

• Background in U.S. and/or international adversarial proceedings, such as patent litigation, Inter Partes Reviews, Post Grant Reviews, or oppositions.

• Exceptional analytical, legal drafting, verbal, and written communication abilities.

• Strong management and leadership capabilities.

• Capacity to work autonomously and collaboratively, prioritize tasks, meet tight deadlines, and manage complex projects.

• An advanced degree, such as a master’s or Ph.D. in a pertinent field, is preferred.

• Relevant fields encompass molecular biology, cell biology, microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, or related disciplines.
