Senior Consultant – Patient Flow & Capacity Management

📋 Description

• Assist with the implementation, optimization, upgrades, assessments, and stabilization of Epic Grand Central.

• Take the lead on specific application, workflow, testing, reporting, data, training, or readiness workstreams independently.

• Evaluate current patient flow operations, system configurations, workflows, performance metrics, governance, and organizational limitations.

• Create and document future-state workflows concerning bed requests, assignments, patient placements, transfers, level-of-care adjustments, environmental services, patient transport, discharge processes, and capacity escalation.

• Configure and enhance the functionality of Epic Grand Central, including features for patient movement, bed planning, bed boards, unit and room settings, transfer workflows, environmental services, transport, and discharge-related tools.

• Facilitate centralized patient placement, transfer center, bed management, and capacity command center initiatives.

• Record operational requirements, Epic configuration decisions, technical specifications, system dependencies, risks, and unresolved decisions.

• Examine dependencies across Grand Central, Prelude, Cadence, ASAP, EpicCare Inpatient, Orders, OpTime, Rover, Cogito, interfaces, and third-party capacity management technologies.

• Assist with capacity command center workflows, role definitions, escalation pathways, decision thresholds, communication processes, and performance reporting.

• Develop and perform unit, application, integrated, regression, and user acceptance testing.

• Generate patient movement and capacity testing scenarios that reflect routine operations, surge conditions, transfer delays, bed constraints, discharge barriers, isolation requirements, and operational exceptions.

• Aid in data validation and reconciliation concerning beds, rooms, units, departments, patient classes, movement, environmental services, and transport.

• Participate in workflow validation, operational simulations, training development, cutover planning, go-live support, and post-go-live stabilization.

• Create or enhance reports, dashboards, work queues, patient lists, and operational metrics related to capacity and patient flow.

• Identify opportunities to minimize emergency department boarding, transfer delays, bed turnaround time, patient placement challenges, and unnecessary variations.

• Lead client working sessions and communicate findings, recommendations, design choices, risks, and project updates to stakeholders.

• Coordinate activities among Epic analysts, operational leaders, client subject matter experts, reporting teams, and technical teams.

• Monitor workstream scope, deliverables, milestones, risks, issues, dependencies, and decisions.

• Provide day-to-day guidance and oversight for consultants or client analysts when necessary.

• Contribute to proposal development, scope definitions, level-of-effort estimations, demonstrations, and presentations.

• Add to reusable assessments, workflow libraries, testing scripts, configuration tools, and perspectives for the Guidehouse EHR practice.

• Willingness to travel up to 50% depending on client and project requirements.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

• At least three years of relevant experience in Epic implementation, patient flow operations, healthcare technology, clinical informatics, or a related field.

• Epic Grand Central certification, prior Grand Central certification with the ability to renew, or extensive Grand Central experience with the capability to obtain certification within an agreed timeframe.

• Practical experience in configuring, implementing, optimizing, or supporting Epic Grand Central.

• Experience in supporting at least one Epic implementation, major upgrade, optimization initiative, or a comparable patient flow technology project.

• Familiarity with hospital patient movement, bed management, patient placement, transfers, environmental services, transport, and discharge processes.

• Experience in analyzing workflows and converting requirements into Epic configuration, documentation, testing, reporting, or implementation tasks.

• Proven ability to develop and execute application and integrated testing.

• Capability to manage assigned work independently, adhere to deadlines, identify risks, and appropriately escalate issues.

• Experience in leading meetings, design sessions, testing activities, or defined project workstreams.

• Strong analytical, written, verbal, and client-facing communication skills.

• Consulting experience or equivalent client-facing delivery experience within a health system, EHR vendor, or healthcare technology company.

• Ability to work effectively with operational, clinical, technical, and executive stakeholders.

• Willingness to travel up to 50% based on client and project requirements.

• Ability to support implementation and go-live activities that may occur outside standard business hours.
