Senior Backend Engineer, Ruby – Production Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Poland.

📋 Description

• Design and deliver moderately to highly complex backend features with minimal supervision, making choices between modular-monolith code, shared components, and independently functioning services.

• Shape team goals, technical direction, and long-term objectives by collaborating with product managers and designers to tailor requirements to user needs.

• Establish backend standards regarding coding style, maintainability, testing, APIs, and operational readiness, promoting quality, security, availability, and performance.

• Guide associate and intermediate engineers, eliminate technical obstacles, and enhance delivery practices through code and design evaluations.

• Identify and mitigate performance and reliability challenges at scale, engage in incident response, and serve as a technical owner when necessary.

• Experiment with and incorporate agentic AI into production engineering processes, assess its effectiveness, and mentor others on responsible usage and sound decision-making.

• Develop the framework that specifies, monitors, and tracks every GitLab.com application rate limit, while migrating existing implementations onto it.

⛳️ Requirements

• Strong expertise in backend architecture, APIs, data systems, and performance optimization within a complex product or service landscape.

• Proficient in contemporary backend programming languages and possess a thorough comprehension of systems programming, with a focus on learning and adaptability rather than expertise in a single language.

• Experience in designing or refining modular backend boundaries, bounded contexts, and migration-friendly architectures.

• Capability to lead through influence, technical acumen, and clear asynchronous written communication, aligning product needs with technical decisions and managing your own tasks.

• Background in building or managing agentic AI systems in production, encompassing loops, tool usage, and error-handling strategies that ensure reliability at scale, beyond merely prompt engineering.

• Familiarity with high-throughput distributed systems, concurrency or profiling; containerized production environments like Kubernetes; database performance including PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, schema evolution or partitioning; large-scale modular monoliths or event-driven architectures; public technical communication, open source maintenance, or developer-centric SaaS — beneficial but not mandatory.
