Reliability Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Connecticut.

📋 Description

• Supervise the operation, maintenance, and enhancement of plant utility systems, which encompass boilers, chillers, cooling towers, compressors, HVAC, water treatment, and distribution systems.

• Create and revise standard operating procedures (SOPs), preventive maintenance (PM) strategies, and asset care standards for utility systems.

• Diagnose equipment failures in utility systems and offer engineering support to technicians.

• Evaluate system performance, efficiency, and adherence to regulatory and safety standards.

• Provide technical assistance for the installation, commissioning, and qualification of new equipment.

• Recognize and promote continuous improvement initiatives in maintenance, operations, and reliability.

• Identify, catalog, and oversee critical spare parts for utility systems and high-impact production equipment.

• Maintain an optimized inventory of parts by balancing availability, lead times, and costs.

• Collaborate with purchasing to qualify vendors, negotiate pricing, and manage long-lead or OEM-specific components.

• Establish and sustain a well-structured Bill of Materials library within the CMMS.

• Assist in initiatives to enhance inventory accuracy and organization of the storeroom utilizing 5S methodologies.

• Lead and conduct Root Cause Analyses (RCA) for significant equipment failures, recurring issues, utility outages, and safety/environmental incidents.

• Employ structured RCA tools such as 5-Whys, Fishbone diagrams, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Fault-Tree analysis.

• Formulate corrective actions, reliability enhancements, and long-term engineering solutions.

• Monitor and report on failure trends, Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF), Mean Time To Repair (MTTR), and key reliability performance indicators (KPIs).

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement corrective actions and assess their effectiveness.

• Ensure that utility systems and maintenance activities meet OSHA, EPA, and local regulatory requirements.

• Assist with risk assessments, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) standards, and engineering safety evaluations.

• Advocate for safe work practices and reliability excellence.

• Support permit applications and processes.


⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Industrial, or a related field is preferred.

• 3–7 years of experience in utilities, maintenance engineering, or plant reliability positions.

• Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).

• Preferred: Experience in manufacturing, semiconductor, pharmaceutical, or industrial facility environments.

• A valid driver's license is required.

• Strong comprehension of mechanical and electrical utility systems.

• Knowledge of reliability engineering principles and RCA methodologies.

• Understanding of spare parts management, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and inventory optimization techniques.

• Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, schematics, and technical drawings.

• Capability to stand for long periods, walk, use hands, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

• Ability to frequently climb stairs and ladders.

• Capacity to regularly lift and/or move up to 70 pounds above chest level.

• Ability to endure challenging rooftop working conditions and extreme temperature fluctuations.

• Ability to work in proximity to moving mechanical parts, high and precarious locations, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, electrical shock hazards, vibrations, noise, and outdoor weather conditions.

• May be required to wear personal protective equipment such as steel-toed shoes, hearing protection, hard hats, eye protection, and hairnets.
